Since you have a 2001 it's really easy to read the diagnostic codes.

Put the key in the ignition. Remember the key cylinder has 5 positions :

ACC (accessory, all the way back)
LOCK
OFF
ON
START

What you want to do is cycle the key in the following sequence, do not start the truck :

Turn to ON, OFF, ON, OFF, ON and then leave in the ON position. After that watch the odometer display. I will say P PCU, then show any codes stored. If there are no codes stored, it will show this : --------. It will then say P DONE. After that it will say P ECU, show codes if any, then say P DONE. After that it will show the normal odometer reading.

Most codes will show up this way, although some codes cannot.

Is your Check Engine Light (CEL) on?

Let us know it goes, and if any codes show up.
