How often to adjust valves

I had my truck in for a trans service(gotta take care of the auto) & while it was in they called and suggested a valve adjustment. My trunk only has 42k miles on it & the manual says to do it at a 100k service. Are they just tring to up sell me,or is it better to do it every 50K??? Thanks

All 24valve trucks i have ever adjusted have been well within the limits at 100,000 miles. So i would say 50,000 is a money maker.

If they are willing to do it for free, go ahead and let them. If not, then pass.

i would do it myself and GO to min spec as they give a ball park adj. spec....evryone I have herd of is loose as a goose....for evey thou your off, your off a thou in cam timing (retard) So tight is better (to a pt.) A lot of us gear heads run them at min spec with good results and no burnt valves.

best method for adjustment, to assure that the valves are bang on, is to use a 6 inch/lb torque wrench, Snap on sells them, as does cummins. They are used for valve and injector adjustments on the larger engines. Insert your feeler gauge, (.010 intake, .020 exhaust) in the appropriate spot, then tighten the adjuster screw using the torque wrench. Just before it clicks, tighten the jam nut down, then remove the feeler gauge. This ensures consistency far greater than the "drag" or "feel" method.
This method is given in several service manuals for cummins C, L, M, N-14 and 855 engines. I have used it for many years, it works great.
Good luck on valve adjustments, and if you want to do them every 50,000 miles, go for it, That is approximately the interval I use, give or take 1000 miles.

Happy Motoring

I kind of disagree....know mater how you do it, the end pruduct is what you want,- when done the clearance is what is most important not how you got there.
Say you want 10 thou -well it better feel like it .Some like to use a dial ind. ( the face is hard to argue with)
Anyway I guess we are hijacking the thread...........But you will find the valves way on the loose side and thats what you want to cure.
