How much should I expect this to cost?

I need to put a new clutch in my truck. I don't have the time, experience or tools to do it myself so I'm going to have to have a transmission shop do the work. Any suggestions on the type of clutch that needs to be put in. I don't have any mods on the truck as of now, and if I do I won't be running over 40-60 extra HP. Anyone have a ballpark estimate on what I should be looking for when I take it in? Thanks.

Check www.southbendclutch.com

I would suggest at least a Con OFE that way you can grow into it in the future with your horsepower needs.

Mine cost $350 including turning the flywheel. If you are going to add hp you better step up and after market clutch. You won't stop at 40-60. Don't ask me how I know.. Do it once and do it right. See my sig for my choice.. Good luck, Phil

Allow the shop 5 hours plus what ever your clutch coast...you have a lot of options......yea I know you can slam it in 3 hours......is a good time to look at the rear seal, replace input shaft if necessary,....tmo

Thanks a lot for the input thus far, it's much appreciated. Couple other things. If I decide to go with something other than an OEM clutch, which I'm sure I'll end up doing (like someone said, do it right so you don't have to worry about it later), is that something that I should purchase on my own and take to the shop or will they be able to buy them cheaper than I can (and then stick me with the overage, haha)? What's s decent SBC run these days . . . and nothing too beefy, but enough to handle some light mods and medium duty towing. I don't tow a lot, mostly just my 18' jon and duck hunting stuff and and every once in a while an enclosed trailer or someone's broke down car.

Lastly, I remember reading on here a while back (like a couple years ago I think . . . it's been a while since I've been on), that the 5spd have a weak 5th gear nut, or something along those lines. Can someone explain this to me, as I know next to nothing about trannys. Thanks!

best thing to do is talk to SBC and tell them what you will be doing with the truck (mods and stuff)..their shrink will direct you to the right council and and parts needed for your dilemma or Dolly lama

I just had a SC Con FE installed. $400 including grinding the flywheel (not on a lathe, but with a grinding stone). One place wanted $650. The shop I went with initially quoted $250 plus cost of grinding. he realized what he had gotten into with the NV5600 and the total came up.
I asked this question on TDR a while back and the concensus was $350-$450.

Sounds like you probably want a Con OFE, plenty of hold for even a lot more power than you are planning.
Many people with modified trucks have had fine results with LUK clutches, not considered quite as high-end as South Bend, but less money can make it worth it. It's up to you. You can see which one I have!

JLand -

I assume when you say 450.00 you are talking about the labor alone. What did your clutch cost and did you buy it from the shop or independently? I am sure that I will go with a SBC clutch, as I don't know what the price difference is, but if it's not more than a 150 bucks then I'll be going SBC. Thanks.

Yes, all of these numbers above are labor only. You provide the aftermarket clutch already purchased, unless you are lucky and live near one of the few SBC dealers.

It cost me $510 with the flywheel turned, but almost everything costs more in Hawaii.
