98.5-2002 CTD Valve Adjustment

(Modified version from the first one, some more in-put added)

1. Remove valve cover (10mm socket) Bend down heater hose, and swing rear of valve cover toward passenger side over heater hose.

2. Remove plastic breather cap. This is the round black plastic cap that the hose for the crankcase breather bottle is attached to. It unscrews counter clockwise

3. Make sure truck is in neutral (If you have a manual Trans.) Rotate engine clockwise as viewed from the front using a 1 and1/8 inch socket on the nut exposed when you removed the breather cap. Use a mirror and flashlight to look inside the cover, line up the scribed timing mark with the notch in the top of the cover. Also there is a mark on the outside of the cover that says TDC. (You can try rotating the engine using the Alternator pulley bolt; I have never been able to make this work)

4. Set IN/EX ON 1, IN ON 2, EX ON 3, IN ON 4, EX ON 5.

5. The cylinders are 1, 2, 3,4,5,6, starting at the front

6. I set mine at .008 intake, and .018 exhaust, and it seamed to work well.

7. Rotate the engine until the scribed timing mark is lined up with the bottom notch (180 degrees from the first position)

8. Set IN/EX ON 6, IN ON 5, EX ON 4, IN ON 3, EX ON 2.

9. Rotate engine back to TDC, and recheck valves set in that position.

10. Rotate engine 180 degrees, and recheck valves set in that position

11. Reinstall breather cap, and connect hose to cap and breather bottle.

12. Reinstall valve cover (gasket is reusable)

I hope this helps people like me who were unsure of how to this the first time. Thanks to everyone for your post’s that I gathered most of this info from.

Hope this helps.
