How to do Front hub bearings/rotors on '99 3500 4x4 CTD??

How to do Front hub bearings/rotors on '99 3500 4x4 CTD??

Well I'm changing the front pads and rotors. I can't remove the rotor as it is stuck on the hub?
I removed the caliper and the hub extension for the wheel. What am I doing wrong?
Also I spinned the rotor/hub and hear-feel the bearings spinnig. Is that normal?
Can the bearings be repacked with grease??
Someone show me how this is done please? I have no manual but will be ordering one soon. I must finish this tear down tommorow!

I hate to tell 'ya but you ain't gonna finish it tomorrow.

The rotors are mounted from inside the hub, you have to remove the whole front wheel hub assembly, and slide axle shaft out of it to get rotors out.
Bearings are not serviceable, the hub comes as a complete units, and cost approx $ 270.00 each to replace.
If you have play in the bearing or if it comes apart when removing hub you WILL HAVE to replace it, otherwise THEY WILL fall apart on you while you drive (It happened to me, so believe it).

If your hubs/bearings have no play, I would just replace the pads and call it good, forget the rotors.

To change rotors I have to slide out the complete axle ??
I thought they just come off after spindle extensions are off??

Also on the 99 4x4 3500 front hubs are not serviceable, I cant repack bearings????

to get the rotor off of the hub you have to take the whole unit off of the axle, and press/punch each stud out, then press/hammer each stud back in the new rotor/old hub, I did this about 2 months ago, even called a wheel shop to see how they did it on these vehicles they told me the same thing, but as for your rotor being stuck on your axle, sounds like its probably never been taken off, there is a seal like thing between the spindle and hub, mine was stuck on from dirt/mud/ everything else in 120k miles, took a while to get off, if your replacing the whole thing get a bfh and have at it, if not, try to ease it off somehow, hope this helps.

Yes Sir, all the 4x4 have non serviceable front bearings, and 2wd from 2001 and up also, same issue for Ford and Chevy
You will not find a comparable replacement or a mfg that makes something similar.

You have to remove the whole hub assembly which includes sliding the short axle stub out of it.
Remove calipers and pads, remove wheel extension housing, remove the large nut that holds axle, there are 4 12point bolts on back of spindle, take these off,
get the whole hub out as 1 piece being careful not to separate bearings.
Press the 8 studs out and rotor will come off.

I had same truck as yours, year and type.



Trust me when I say you'll have the whole day taken if you decide to do it.

Crap I think I just going to slap new pads on and clean all good and go!

My rotors don't look too thin but I wont be able to cut them if I don't take all apart.

Think if I put new pads on old rotors, would I have a problem??

That's exactly what I did for 150,00 miles (replaced pads 3 times).
You will loose slightly your braking power but you'll be fine, give them a little longer break-in time.

Main issue are bearings, if they have no play you're doing good, otherwise you'll have to replace them.
I tried to avoid it and I lost the complete left wheel on interstate at 75mph towing a boat, it was not pretty

thanks for the info! Will get r done in d morning. Just pads and some disc quiet spray for the pads also!

Yep i SEE it now. Just doing pads then because no play on hub assembly bearings.

My truck has 190K. how long these bearings last?? Hub bearing I mean...

i would put new hub & bearing assy's....... if you can hear /feel the bearings, they don't have much life left

190k huh ??? Mine had 220k when I lost them, so you are borderline.
I would start saving for them, the run around$ 250.00 each OEM discounted at online dealers.
When mine went out one even stripped the large nut off the shaft.
There's a lot of weight in front of your truck, don't take it lightly, it is a dangerous condition.

I think for that money I would rather look for aftermarket lock/unlocking hubs that are serviceable with good timken bearings!!!

ANYONE KNOW WHERE AND HOW MUCH???

You can't change to that kind of hub. Were stuck with what dodge gave us.

For 300$ more I get free spool axles up front which can save fuel and wear on parts spinning and I can service bearings when needed!!
