At home trany swap

I am thinking about swaping out my auto trany at home. What do you guys use for a trany lift? Did you need to jack up the truck? Any other tips?

Thanks Bob

I use a floor jack with a custom "pan" to hold the tranny. You could just use a piece of wood if you are careful. I did put the truck up on jackstands to make more room to move the tranny around.

I did it twice in 6 months. Its not that bad but you will use some new language. I didnt have to jack my truck up at all cuz its high enough the way it is(see sig). But i would sugest you put the front up on stand about 5 inches. For the cross member you need to spread the frame rails a lil, so having a port a power spreader is the key. Takeing out your down pipe gives alot of room. A buddy to help with lifting in and out part helps alot. these trannys are clumsy. I just used a floor jack with a pieces of wood and a strap too lift and lower the trans.

A six pack of your favorite beverage ... consumed quickly. Jack up your truck, slide under the truck, lay the tranny on your chest, use your knees to support the tranny while you align the input shaft ... piece of cake!

That's how I installed my Muncie 4 speed on my 67 Rally Sport when I was 19. Never again!

I bench pressed my buddy's 6spd with the transfer case and slammed it down on the crossmember to help beat it out. Talk about a really stupid idea.

Dieselrob,
I see you have a georend Bros trans, was it worth it, with all the shipping expense? Why didn't you go local? I am thinking of doing the same thing, any ideas?

Thanks Bob

The truck in my sig has a Goerend and in my opinion it was well worth it to have it shipped. Didn't go local because the only good tranny builder around here is Haisley's and they're pricy$$$.
