Thumbs up High Idle

Went to the dealer and had them enable my high idle and it works. Haven't seen the 3 cyl thing yet though. Just wanted to say that I have not been a member here that long but I think the guys here are top notch and I wanted to say thank you for your post and advice that lead me to get this done. Getting this done has probably saved me in the end since I like to let her idle for extended periods of time. I also have a mustang and when I look to some of there sites you get nothing but bashing and a bunch of smart mouth kid's. Therfore you get very limited advice and don't even want to bother giving any. Anyways Thanks again fellas. Corey

Always glad to hear about the good things.

Just wish I could get mine done right, it still doesn't seem to work.

I dont understand what you did because I thought that the high idle the dealer enabled was for the 3 cylinder cold warm up? So what did you mean when you said it worked but no 3 cylinder? I'd love to have a high idler that I didnt have to buy.

The factory high idle will only do the 3 cylinder thing when it hits a certain temp (can't remember what deg.). It will only high idle untill that temp.

Katoom, apparently the computer has the program in it to high idle it just needs to be activated along with the 3cyl thing. If yours is idling high then yours must have been activated already. Mine would fire up and only idle at 800rpm no matter what the temps were. Now I fire her up and about a minute later wolla we got 1150 rpm. Thanks again guys

DieselDude Yeah the dealer charged me $80. As far as your truck goes from what i've seen on here is that your's has it and just needs to be enabled by the dealer.

The 3 cylinder feature is a sub-feature of the high idle routine. You do not have to enable the 3 cylinder feature when you activate the high idle feature. Actually, my local Cummins dealer recommended getting the high idle feature enabled to ward off SVS, but recommended against enabling the 3 cylinder feature when I talked to them about it. He told me that is a Dodge thing and not a Cummins feature.

if you are still under factory warranty the dealer won't charge to activate it, because I had them activate mine for free. and it finally kicked in this morning, it had sat in 15 degree temps and never kicked it. This morning it was 25 and worked like a charm....go figure

The 3 cyl. enables around 5 Fahr. and below (in my experience) and the high idle is a tad less precise. I've had it come on when it's 30 and not enable when it was 15. Go figure A lot of the time I've found it depends on how the truck is facing and how long the artic wind up here has been blasting through the grill - kinda cools the underhood temps real quick! High idle info can be found here. The TSB describes what it is, what parameters are necessary for it to work, how it works and the instructions the dealer would need (if they don't already have them) to perform the upgrade.
