Help! Something seriously wrong
Oh yay, another problem with my truck.

I'm driving home today and my truck starts hesitating REAL bad on the Interstate. I turn the comp off, still bucking when I hit the pedal. Come home, I smell either burning rubber or something similair. Not like tires, but something else. SO, I go around the block again, it gets REAL bad. Come home, stinks like crazy. This is while the comp is off. I can't really tell where the smell is coming from, but my first thought is that it's coming from underneath and not the engine compartment. Don't know for sure if that's the case, because I did smell it some when I opened the hood, but whatever it is, it can't be good. I don't know if it's a pump, tranny, or something else, but it's beginning to buck real bad. When looking at the rpms, I don't see a real drop, but it's real hard to tell. That smell though worries me. Anyone have any ideas?? I would be glad to fill you in on details if you ask as well. I'm sure I'm not thinking of everything right now.

truck has 101k miles. :

Jack, check the belt to see if its burned, if it is, then check to see if a bearing is out on your AC pulley or alternator or the others.
Perhaps a bearing failed or seized and the belt is ripping up.
Also, I think the belt tensioner on these trucks is plastic...it may have failed too.
Hows the voltage? Can you run it in Park and check carefully under the hood for tell tale signs of a bad pulley etc?

i too would say the belt. i had it happen on a jeep. the belt didnt break, it just jumped over a bit and was rubbing against the water pump. i'd start there though.

Re:Help! Something seriously wrong
I hope not as well. The smell was coming from the lift pump for sure. I couldn't smell anything from the injection pump and the lift pump was intermittent. It seemed when it cooled down, it would work but when it started to warm up, it would die. The truck has been running fine under WOT until today so I'm sure it was gradually dying, and dumped totally today. If I fried the injector pump, then so be it I guess. You wanna play, you gotta pay. Fuel pressure gauge is coming.

Jack hope it works out well for you. If you look at my thread, I would have lost my injection pump if not for the pressure gage. At that I hope I did not drive far before I noticed it. They are a must on the Dodge.

Jack:

Sorry to hear about your lift pump. I replaced mine this spring with the Cummins stock pump and have had real good pressure readings. 15+ idle, 14 crusing at 60, 10 WOT. That's with Step 1 injectors and an EZ. The part number is 3990082 for the '99. Yours is a 99 like mine, right? Cost about $160.00 for the pump.

Good luck.

DeWain
