I am thinking of buying an 01 dually turbo diesel from a friend...low miles perfect condition...it would be my first dodge after having fords....am i making a good choice

from driving my dads 7.3 PSD and my 01 Cummins, I would take the cummins any day. IMO the fords have a little better interior but the engine doesnt compare (in both power and economy). The only thing to worry about is the VP44 and I wouldnt let that stop you from buying the truck.

by the way is it a 5-speed, 6-speed, or auto?

Its an auto...will it have as much power as an 02 7.3 power stroke?

if both trucks are stock, then the ford will have more power and pull much better than the dodge.i've had tons of fords and dodges and fords are better hands down as far as leaving them stock.

True to a point.Both will pull more than most will ever put behind it. The big difference would be, the Ford will get you 9-13 mpg towing while a Dodge will do 15-20mpg.

i have pulled woth my bosses 06 ford and my 05 cummins and there is a difference the ford just didn't want to go you had to floor it to get it to go any where loaded. my cummins would start to move once you pushed the pedal down. and this is both stock

Just make sure you need a dually, I have an '02 and love it and I could do most of what I do without a dually,but it sure has come in handy towing several times. Just remember that you will buy 6 tires not 4. By the way, I don't regret buying a dodge because I bought it for the engine and 6 speed, I just wish dodge had a little nicer interior. good luck in your truck shopping.

even though you say your buying from a friend... get it checked out especially the fuel pressure, death wobble, etc.

I am in the exact same situation as you!

I have (and still do) own many F-350's(single rear wheel) with 7.3's and have purchased a 02 3500 dually 4x4 with the cummins. This represents my first Dodge(with a diesel) since a 1986 pick up with the 318 v8. I will pick up the truck sometime next week. The seller is waiting for my funds to clear before he releases the truck to me.

Let's see how it goes!

You would not buy a truck based upon a one-line description. How about some more info, take your time and describe the truck in detail, as well as maintance history, planned use, etc.

now I'll "one-liner" a few things for you to use the search function for: VP-44, Lift Pump, 53 block, RE-47 trans, fuel pressure, rear disc brakes.

As to the 7.3L Powerstroke, while it's been a decent engine overall, it's a whole different animal than the 5.9L Cummins I-6. It's also one of the most variable engine's I've ever exeperanced. Take 5 with the 235 hp advertised rating, and 3 would "feel" quite quick, the other 2 felt "dead." It's something with the calibration, if it's a dead one, it may need a re-flash.

Sonnys, I had all the 3 brands with an average of 125,000 driven on each, trust me when you go Cummins you don't look back, and if you do you are laughing hard at the others.
Powerjokes don't keep up, the only one that was "acceptable" (I had 2 of them) were the 7.3s which you'll find very tough if not impossible to find with low miles, they were noisier and had cold start issues beside dropping glow plugs into motor (they still used glow plugs.... )

I am at my 5th Dodge and will keep going this way.

Your deal is excellent, and depending on price, I would definitely close the deal if the inspection check fine.
