has anybody had problems with a 6 speed??
ok so ive installed a dd clutch in my rig. and when i put the shifter back on, i dont guess i got it really tight, and the 4 bolts that hold it onto the top of the trans worked themselves loose. i was goin to school on friday and i got about 1/2 mile from the house and i was in 4th, and then i herd the gears grind and then i herd the tires bark. while it was in 4th, it stuck itself into 2nd too. i pulled over and the only gear i could get it into was reverse so i backed it to the house. i pulled the console out of it and found that the bolts were loose. i tightned them down but it did the same thing again. so ive got it tore apart now.
i was just wondering if anybody else has had any trans problems?

The detent system in the shift linkage prevents the transmission from going into 2 gears at the same time. Don't really see how that can happen Sounds like your input shaft is seized to the mainshaft. Transmission would not pull in reverse if you were in 2 gears.

well it went from 4th to 2nd with out going up over and down. it was jsut across and bam, into 2nd. just tore it outta the truck and got it apart. i took the pto cover off and very little oil. yeah yeah i know it was stupid. dont even start, weve all done somthing retarted. theres what looks like 90 wt all over the trans. might be motor oil. dont think so tho. because the shifter was loose on top. also while i was in there i found a couple little chunks of metal and a fine powder mix of 90wt and what used to be bearings. this smarts. guys, be sure to check your oil very very regularly.
for those of yall who have been into these, how in the bloody heck does the
bell housing come off of the trans.??? ive been yankin on that thing for 30 minutes.i can get it bout 1/2 inch then it wont go no more. so any advice would be appricated

I just had something similar happen. I was driving in 4th gear when all the sudden the rear tires locked up and i came to a violently bouncing stop. I put the truck in first and let out on the clutch, and it lugged the motor, and hopped forward, barely. It was impossible to drive it, 2wd 4wd or anything. we had to get a flatbed to tow it up to my buddys house and thinking it was the transfer case, we pulled it, but it moved freely, the rear diff. moves freely...so i guess its the transmission? the clutch engages and disengages fine. Also, it wont go into 1st gear, but will go through all other gears easily. any thoughts?

These transmissions like lots of oil (and I mean lots). Double what Dodge recommends.
I believe the input shaft comes out the rear. The bell housing comes off after all the insides go out the back end. It takes special tools to remove the rear housing and also hold everything together while it is hoisted out with a lift. Parts inside are very heavy and have to come out as a unit. I've heard you can put rubber bands around some of the pieces and hold them together, but I've not tried this.
I tried pulling the bell housing off mine also, but just as you it would move about a half an inch and stop. All I wanted to do was pull the input shaft and replace the bearing there, but finally gave up and ordered a rebuilt trans. It was expensive, but I did not want to buy special tools to rebuild a transmission one time.
The two most important things to remember: (one) use the CORRECT oil; (two) overfill by at least double. Transmission will last a long time.
