Had a 216 DTC but can't get it to set again...
I had my truck dead pedal on me 2x in the last couple of days so I scanned the codes and got the kiss of death 216 DTC. I reset the code programmed the Smarty back to stock and I can't get it to set again. Getting some insight here that my dealer probably won't replace the pump just on my word of seeing the code, what is a good way to get the code to set again? Put it on the Full Kung Fu SW#9 and let'r buck?
When I bought my truck, the salesman told me that the engine had a 10yr 100K warranty. Folks here have told me that it is only 5 yrs and 100K? Anyone know the real answer so I have some good speak when I go to the dealer? I bought the truck in July of 2002 so I still have warranty in the 5yr case, but the way Murphy's law treats me, my IP will totally fail on Aug 1st. My truck has just under 60k miles on it.
In summary, why would this code set and then not set again? How much longer before it dies completely?

Kurtaing,
Thanks for the reply. No I don't plan on saying anything about the smarty. I'll research the warranty thing a bit. It goes in tomorrow morning for the new pump and I am going to try like heck to get that code to set again.
Anyone know how long these things usually run after the first 216 code sets? I am 50 miles from home right now and need to get my kid 30 miles the other way for a ball game tonight. My car dropped the clutch on monday so that is why I started driving the truck. Man, what luck I have!!!!

And why would you want to force the IP into a fault mode? If you pamper it by giving it decent upstream pressure it may last a while. If you can't afford to take chances (while saving money for an IP), then just buy an IP and replace.

If they replace the pump its going to go in the fuel tank as is the new repair procedure for the dealer fix. Some think this is a good idea becasue the pumps are made to push fuel, not pull it. I don't think this is a big deal but if you are gonna do a FASS or other type of Hi PO pump you may end up uninstalling it. I don't know if they are able to be drawn through. Just a thought. Good luck regaining the code. Kurt

we are wanting them to replace the VP44. and yes they will want to put in a intank lift pump in, more than likely. If you are going to stay close to stock, it's ok, but if your going to add fuel he will have to do one of two things, put a helpr pump on it, or a drawstraw and a fass/walbro. I would not pay any of my money for the intank, but if it's free. It and a holley blue works real good together

Went to the dealer today
I went to the dealer today. I could not get the codes or the dead pedal to return on the stock software. It will only do it with the SW#1 and up with the Smarty. But the kicker is that it also throws a code of "Non-stock software installed" P0602 which I really don't want to leave in there as it will turn a friendly dealer visit into an ugly one. It seems that I can't get the P0216 code to set without setting the p0602.
On the way to the dealer running stock programming, I could get the fuel pressure down to zero on the Quad Recon XZT. The dealer was able to do the same. He then connected his own fuel guage and got it to pull down to 2 psi but said that was fine.
When all was said and done I left $120 lighter and nothing was done. I did find out that I still have 2 more months and 41K miles of engine warranty left (weird because I bought it in July of 02) and I have 25 more months and 11K miles of "powertrain" waranty left. The service writer couldn't tell me if the "powertrain" warranty covered the VP44 as well, so does anyone know?
Not sure what to do...might be a good time to buy and extended warranty????

Good point Black, The dealer told me that it was going to be $3K to install the VP44 (whew)..
I am kind of between a rock and a hard place right now because I am taking my family on a 1000+ mile camping trip pulling the 5th wheel in a couple of weeks and I don't know if I can trust this pump. Pretty sad for a truck with only 59K on it. I bought this truck for the engine longevity, I just wish Cummins and Dodge would step up and fix these things so we wouldn't have to worry about them.

What kind of fuel pressure are you getting under load? If it's 9# or under, it's probably your LP and it will take out your VP44. Almost the same thing happened to me. Mine went out at just a two weeks over my 5yr. period w/ 62,000 mi. on the truck. The dealer would not cover it. I didn't have a fuel pressure gauge at that time so I didn't know what pressure was. Now I have one, $2,000.00 later after replacing the Lp and VP44.
