Gray smoke
Day before yesterday, the truck ran great. Yesterday, it seemed sluggish, and didn't do as much when the turbo spooled. When the pedal was put down, the smoke was not black, but a sort of lighter gray.
Not white smoke, not blue smoke, and not brown smoke. Oil looks good, no antifreeze glop.
But it starts great, idles smoothly, doesn't miss, and gets over 20 mpg.
Fuel suddenly gone bad? Dribbling injector? If it was a head gasket, wouldn't it be blowing white smoke all the time, especially at start up?
It's an '02 ETH/DEE, with Comp (no pump wire), 275's.
Thanks. I.

This kinda sounds like what my truck is doing now. Does yours feel like it cuts in and out under hard acceleration? Mine just started cutting out today, and I noticed in the rear view mirror that when it did I got a little gray smoke in with the black. : I've been told it's the VP-44 heading down hill but have yet to have some one pull the codes for me.
It almost feels as if I took out the DD3 and put the stocker's back in.

Re:Gray smoke
My map/boost sensor is fine so is all other electrical conections.
My truck started being slugish just when it was cold then once it came up to operating temperature and I shut it back down and then restarted it it would run fine. Now the problem is all over the place sometimes it will run good others it will run like I put the stock injectors back in. ???
Hopefully tomorrow I will know more. A friend is coming over with his scan tool to give me a hand.

Re:Gray smoke
For me, the FP is normal -- 17 psi at idle, 14 psi at 70 mph, 11 at WOT. Mine doesn't go "back and forth" like DarrellB's; it's kinda stuck -- but you're right, it's just like I took out the 275's or the Comp.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I replaced the air filter just before this happened. The BHAF I replaced was clogged with fine dust, and the new filter is a high flow AFE. Could tell the difference immediately, but then the next time I started up, it was sluggish. Hmmm. . . .
Why does gray smoke mean the VP44 is going bye-bye?

Re:Gray smoke
Grey smoke can equal unburnt fuel, not from the normal combustion process (ie black smoke due to more fuel than the alloted air can burn) but from improper timing of the injection event so that fuel doesn't even ignite or ignite as much as it should due to too late or too early of an injection event (injection pump timing failure). Mine belched all kinds of grey/blue smoke when my vp said seeeeya.

Re:Gray smoke
OK, checked further, in better light. Black smoke on the lower settings for the Comp, grayish-black smoke on the higher settings. Actually seems like as much or more smoke on the lower settings.
Comp or the VP44? Or -- :P -- both?

Re:Gray smoke
My problem is solved. 8)
Stakeman was almost right. It was the map/boost sensor but what was wrong was I put a new sensor in about 2 weeks ago thinking that was the problem but didn't clear the over boost code in the ECM. Scott came over this evening with his scan tool and cleared the code for me and all is good.
Thanks again Scott for all the help.
