Getting 17 now what can I expect?

Truck only has 4K miles on it now and its winter so I am burning winter fuel. Getting 17 mpg now, what do you think I will get when it gets broken in? It's a Regular Cab 4x4 duelly that weighs 6800 lbs empty.

I get 18mpg at 70 mph. Best it's ever got and only 165,000 miles.

Re:Getting 17 now what can I expect?

For a lot of miles my truck got 17 on the highway and seemed to all of a sudden start getting 20, sometimes a little more before getting to 100,000. My last IFTA quarter average for all miles was 12.22 which is hard towing miles. The third quarter was 12.44. I run 70 plus rarely over 75 but close and the trailer is like pulling a parachute. Loaded now it seems to get better mileage or the same at 70 than keeping 60 or 62, but see the 70 is in od the 60 is in direct. Drops off some at a steady 80 loaded. Wind and hills affect it more. Birmingham to Huntsville an back gets like two mpg less than Birmingham to Atlanta. Every once in a while I get a tank that stinks, like 30 less miles on the tank. Did that last night. Also looks like it takes near one gallon per hour sitting idle at 1500. Costs to run it. But have to have heat [undecided]

Tank I just checked got 15 mpg (unloaded), mixed driving and with my heavy heavy foot in town. I'm gonna take it easy on the next one and see what difference it makes.

Only have 6,500 miles on mine and am getting average 14 mpg. Before winter I was getting an average of 16-17.

I keep hearing it should get better with more miles I put on her.

I was hoping with this new truck that I would get 18-19 winter and 20-21 summer and 23-24 highway summer. Figured since it weighed around 600lbs less and it was a manual that I would get the better numbers. I guess time will tell. I am happy that I am getting 2 mpg better (winter) on this new truck (with 600 lbs of sand bags in the back) then on my old truck (empty) I do think the quality of diesel makes a big difference and that varies a lot.

I get 16 winter, 17.5 summer driving some highway and some around town. You are right about the fuel quality affecting milage, and so does the depth of your foot on the accelerator pedal. I have averaged 18.5 when staying under 2000 RPM, but most of the time I can't keep myself from doing the traffic flow (70 MPH), so I get 17.5 most of the time. 11.3 pulling my 5ver.

Re:Getting 17 now what can I expect?

I was hitting 19.xx MPG in November.... now i'm down to 12! Probably because I sit and high idle it longer since it's been highs of less than 20 (and usually in the negatives w/ the wind chill). Can't wait until spring so I get better mileage again... ;D

Tony

I dunno if the conversion is the same for US to can but I was getting around 28 with mods last summer (not off the computer) and my grandfather got over 30 with his 99. Like I said I dunno if the coversion is the same or not but your numbers seem low compared to ours my pops truck used to get around 26 stock it was a 00.

Re:Getting 17 now what can I expect?

I used to regularly get 19-20 with my old Ford. This new one seems to be getting 17-18 running at about 70-75, same speed as the Ford. I don't know if this one is heavier. The Ford was a std. cab F350 that wieghed in at about 7700, before I hooked it to a trailer. We like this one because it is quiet inside, and we have a back seat.
