Gen 2 Oil Change Interval
My owners manual says about 3.8k for servere duty. My brother hadan 07 5.9, his says 7.5k.
Has anything changed or should we go by the older standard for the 02?
Also, CJ oil is not as good as CI+4, so what impact does that have?
I am guessing change at 5k and take 2 asprin.

You know everyone has an opinion on this, but I go by driving environ per interval.
We get a lot of rain around here so a bunch of my driving is in the wet. Wet roads = a lot less dust so I'll go 5K and not sweat it.
In the summer when its drier and I head east a lot I change at 3K-3.5K. If towing a lot I cahnge it out sooner, etc.
Don't sweat the oil ratings, just run Delo or Rotella 15w-40 and you'll always be in spec's.
Also, my model puts out more soot than the newer ones, which, IIRC can make the oil more acidic after longer periods of time, so remember to adjust for time also, not just mileage.

Do you let your truck warm up to 190 before you shut it down?Do you run it at idle for a long time?If you run it on short trips all the time that changes everything.I do 3000 or so.My truck runs a mix hy/city but never shut off cold.

Funny thing is I have never had an oil related failure in any of the rigs I have owned, even the old junkers when I was in high school. Usually carbs, cooling, valves etc.

I run synthetic oils and good filters in all my vehicles and change only once a year. Below is the interval for 5.9 diesel engine truck.
Three times (3X) OEM* recommendation, not to exceed 50,000 miles/600 hours or one year, whichever comes first. Drain intervals may be extended further with oil analysis.

I normally always make sure I drive it until it gets to at leats 170 if not 190.
I mostlu use it to haul my Fiver or utility trailer, so it gets a good workout.
I drive it at least once a week to keep the seals good and lube on everything, since it sits between workouts.
Sounds like once a year or 4-5k is a good practice. Oil is cheap compared to a new motor.
It is not as chaep as when I got my truck and I could get Rotella T for about $25-28 a case(4 gal) at Sams. I wish we couls still get CI+4 without goingto extrordinary lengths. I have a stockpile for another 3-4 years, if not more.

As already mentioned, if you always let your engine reach full operating temperature, run at full operating temp, run the "right" oil, dont drive in extreme dusty conditions, etc....., then 5,000-7,500 miles with regular oil is perfectly acceptable. Maybe even longer if you drive for long highway distances between shutdowns. Diesel engines aren't like gasoline engines whereby the diesel combustion doesn't contaminate crankcase oil like gasoline engines do so therefor they can run far longer between oil changes. And dont be fooled by todays oil marketing ploys either. Oil NEVER looses it ability to lubricate unless it cokes.....but it does get contaminated and the viscosity polymers can go bad over time. Even your gasoline engine can easily go past the claimed 3000 mile intervals if its running good and driven right. And the 3 month time frame oil change thing is just plain stupid. They simply want people to buy more oil. Am I supposed to believe that if I drive my vehicle only a few hundred miles a month that I have to change the oil in 3 months? Talk about a waste of money. So use good filters, the right type of oil, keep your engine running good, run it properly, and you will not have a problem with extended oil changes.

Several years ago at the Logging Conference in Eugene, OR I spoke with one of the guys from one of the major oil product displays. I told him I always use Stratapore filters and he said I was wasting money by changing sooner than 10,000 miles. Made me not feel a bit bad by changing at the recommended 7,500 mile interval. Outfit I drove truck for part time changes oil on their Mack engines @ 25,000 interval with the very same oil many of us use. They finally tore my brothers tractor down at about 800,000 miles and said the engine still did not need a rebuild.

Other than that, oil sheering and viscosity polymer breakdown are the other reasons oil needs to be changed. Which is why you should stay away from oils with a viscosity range of more than 30.

i did mine at 7500 with rotella 15-40 and sent to analysis and it came back better then average and they told me to go to 9000 and send another sample to sit how it did. I am not there yet. I will see if i can post my oil sample report.

thats real world right there, i like to hear that, running the same oil, was starting to worry about 5k, no more
