Fuel pump bit the dust, I think?

The ongoing dead pedal problem in my dads 2001 is running us nuts! I called a reputable injection pump service and he said that the lift pump would cause a dead pedal. He said I need to check lift pump pressure and on the test port with a new snap on gauge it showed 0 psi while cranknig and 5-6 psi driving down the road. I know that before we tackle the injection pump possibilites we need to make the lift pump system reliable. what should I replace the in tank pump with? Pop just pulls a little travel trailer and his truck is stock so he probably wont need (or go for) a $1000.00 pro stock fuel pump for competition. Just something that will make his truck reliable. Thanks in advance.

I forgot to say that a couple of months ago we replaced the A.P.S. (I guess thats what the fly by wire sensor is called at the end of the throttle cable) and it did nothing.
when Pops pedal goes dead he can kill the engine, put it in neutral and crank it back up and its fixed. It will take off and run like mad (until the next spell)

What about this pump, it comes with a low psi warning system to tell us when to pull over and replace it. Its on ebay for under $150.00 and looks like a factory part (in a cummins box) will I have to pull the retro pump in the tank for this one to work?

This is a Brand New Cummins factory lift pump that fits 1998 1/2 thru 2002 Dodge Ram trucks with the 24v ISB Cummins Diesel engine. This is the newest version of this pump.It is a genuine Cummins and it has never been used. It will be shiped USPS after payment is recieved.

Includes:

(1) New Fuel Pump (Cummins)

(4) Washers for Banjo fittings

(1) Low Pressure Switch

(1) Fitting for Low Pressure Switch

(1) Electrical Wiring Pigtail for Low Pressure Switch

(1) Lift Pump Instructions for Installation

Product only removed for picture only! New in the box

First, are you sure you have an intank pump? If so you will have to pull it out or put in a draw straw. Then go with a fass or walbro lift pump. You could go back to the old style pump, but why? (not very reliable) but if so put it back by the tank. IMHO you will have to replace the IP (vp44) before the DP will go away.

Put a REAL pump on it, like a FASS or similar good pump that does away with ALL factory cummins or dodge junk. Why spend 150 5 times spend 500 once
