Fuel Leak, Need help getting started

Fuel Leak, Need help getting started

1999 Dodge, started leaking diesel fuel from a fitting on the driver side of the engine. I can discribe where the leak is but I do not know the proper names of what I am looking at, can some one give a guy a hand? Initially the truck just took more time/cranks to start and leak was anoying, now the truck won't start!
The leaking fuel line in question travels forward and bolts onto a manifold facing down at a 45 degree angle to the ground and the bolt are easy to get a wrench on. Also the line goes to the larger (19mm bolt) of the 2 fittings bolted to the manifold. The leak itself is where the fuel line goes into the fitting that is bolted to the manifold. What am I dealing with, and where do I start?

Those are called banjo bolts. That is the injection pump not a manifold. The banjo bolts have sealing washers, 2 per bolt.

I think what you are describing is a leaking injector line. Use your 19mm wrench undo the nut and slide it back. If the line is good , as in not cracked or split, then you have a leak most likely between the line and the connector. This happens usually when bleeding the injectors. A piece of something like corrosion or metal, is not letting the line seal real good with the connector. A temporary field fix is to use fine emery cloth like 600 grit and polish the end of the line. To do this you will need to get some play in the line by undoing some of the clamps. To keep from gettiing contamination in the system use a combination of towel and fuel from the line itself to keep things clean. You can turn the engine over to get fuel to squirt out of the line to clean things when you need it. You can try to loosen the line and then retighten and few times to try and get things to seat properly. This will shut the leak down until you can get back to the shop. Then you can determine if you need a new connector, $22.00 from cummins. Get a new O ring while you are at it. Or maybe a new line. Or maybe both. Do a search for leaky injector line.

Thanks for the help, and now the rest of the story. Fuel injector return line cracked and related to or as a result of that the fuel injector pump failed. I got 250,000 out of the OME pump and I guess that's a good run. Replaced, return line, check value, fuel injector pump (Bosch VP44), and added a lift pump to increase the pressure and flow to the injector pump. And I am back on the road. Thanks for the input.
