Fuel leak I can't track down...

On my '02 HO six speed, I have a fuel leak that is coming from somewhere around the back of the motor. The fuel is running down from where ever and running down the bell housing and leaking to the ground right under the tranny bell housing. It only leaks to a pretty damp spot about 4-6" in diameter and then it quits leaking, only about 30 min to an hour. It doesn't seem to leak while the truck is running but begins dripping as soon as the truck is shut down. Most mornings after the truck sits for more than 5 hours or so, it is hard to start, but not the rest of the day, only if I let you sit for a long time. When running the heater or the A/C sometimes there will be a strong raw diesel smell to it.

The leak began after the dealership did the new style transfer pump installation. I took it back to them and they "said" that the injection pump was leaking and they changed it, but the spot on the ground is no where near the injection pump. When I got it back it still leaked! I took it back again and they swore to me that it was tranny fluid, and changed the front seal. And it still leaks!

Does anybody have any suggestions? I am tired of leaving spots everywhere I park!

It is an '02 HO six speed 4x4, 81K, with a super chips tuner, 4" downpipe, and 5 stacks. Those are the only things that I have done to the truck.

Isn't there a fuel return line back there?

Would it be possible for them to have reused a banjo bolt washer and it is now leaking? When you drive the windflow over the car evaps. the diesel and when you stop the residual drips to the ground. Just a thought...I would check the torque on the bolts/fitting and see if there is a loose connection.

Other than that...

Had this twice - leaks on the back-end of the engine, from the bell-housing. Both times it was loose injector line nuts at the front of the engine. Both times I missed it, because I shut off the engine and waited a few minutes before I checked the nuts, and on the hot head metal, the diesel fuel evaporated sufficiently so I thought the area was dry.

Check your injector line nuts while the engine is running and leaking. Use a piece of tissue paper underneath the nuts to be sure. If it comes away wet, tighten them down. The fuel will run out of them, down into a seam on the intake where it's hard to see, and back to the rear of the engine, where it will spill down the fuel return line, onto the starter, and onto the top-side part of the bell-housing. Viola! You have something that looks like a classic tranny or rear-engine seal failure. Except it's a very light and odd-smelling oil....

Theres a return line bajo bolt on the back of the head. That may also be your culprit.

I shoved paper towel under all of the injector nuts for the short drive home. when I got home they were all dry, so I don't think it is that. But, I was poking around some more and found that banjo bolt on the back of the head and I think that is the culprit. I will watch it and mess with it some more this week and let you guys now what happens.

If you have metal fuel lines that run past the bell housing, there is a bracket that's welded to them that attached to the bellhousing and have been known to crack and leak there. They are hard to see and the best repair is to run a rubber line from the tank forward and bypass the metal lines. If it's still under warranty I'd let them replace the metal lines for you.
