fuel filter

I have changed my filter once, and just removed the cap, pulled out the old filter, and popped in the new one. I have since heard that I should have drained the canister first. I was curious what steps I should take to do this right?

There's a valve on the fuel filter assembly toward the front of the truck. It's got a black handle on it. Turn it which ever way it wants to go to open it. Unscrew the top, and the fuel in the canister will drain out a tube, so you'll probably want to put a bucket under it to catch the fuel. You're supposed to clean the water if fuel sensor, but i've never had any water in my fuel, so I haven't worried about it. Put the new filter in, screw the top back on, then turn the key to start the engine, but just bump the starter. Leave the key on for 30 seconds or so, until the lift pump goes off. Do this a bunch of times so the lift pump can prime the system. It may take a while, so don't worry. That's about it.

Thanks, is there any way to know that its primed, other than cranking?

If you cant get the engine to start or keep running this trick might help you, it has helped me a few times! Using air gun pressurize the fuel tank it gets the air out of the system then the truck will start.

I've read both sides of what I did last time - I drained the filter, removed it and the 0-ring and then wiped out the canister with a clean rag. I then filled the canister about 3/4 full with NEW diesel put the 0-ring on, then screwed the whole contraption back on. I closed the drain valve, got in and hit the key and the truck ran without priming. I believe that by using NEW fuel to re-fill the canister & filter, you should be 99.9 percent safe. It was easier on the starter, too.

I don't think this is a good idea. Lint from the rag could be left on any sharp edges inside the canister and end up in the injection pump. I don't know for sure if this will harm anything, but I am pretty sure it won't help.

All the instructions I've seen say to wipe the WIF probes and the inside of the cannister.
I believe it says with a lint free cloth though.

As far as priming the system, the first time I changed it it took forever to start.
Did the bump the starter 2-3 times, try to start.
Even bled the shraeder valve (test port) on the injection pump.

2nd time I pulled the old filter, wiped the interior, put in the new filter and O ring and screwed the cap on only one turn.
I then bumped the starter, and by the time I got around the door, fuel was already spilling out of the cannister.
I quickly tightened down the cap, then tried to start and it fired right up as if the filter had never been changed.
No need to bleed any air out, as the rising fuel pushed it all out through the loose cap.

Whether its real or imagined, I believe I can hear a different tone (sound) from the lift pump when it is finally getting pressurized.

Woulnt adding new fuel in this manner be adding unfiltered fuel? Why would this be different that not draining the canister? Dumb questions, I know, I am a newbie.

Phox Mudder, I took your advice on leaving the cap loose while priming, it worked like a charm. The engine started like it always does. I even gave it a handicap by forgetting to close the drain until it had been running a while, that would have probably hurt my mileage.
