Smile Fuel cools the VP

Just for the heck of it, I put my hand in the VP electrics cover on top and even though I'd been driving the truck awhile, the cover was just warm. When I put my hand on the APPS bracket, I removed it quick because of the hot temp...hot as everything else under the hood.
The inlet side to the aftercooler was fairly hot too even though the motor had been idling a few minutes (???)

Good reason not to try to run the fuel tank all the way to empty....

When the turbo compresses the air it heats up to if not over 300deg f that is the air to air ( charge air ) coolers job. Yes fuel is the only thing that cools the vp44

I wonder if some kind of cover on the vp44 to help deflect engine heat would help any.

Also another good reason to have a fuel pressure gauge. You know how much cool fuel your pumping to the VP44...

As for the Air to Air cooler... Mine take a heavy toll of bugs. Once a week I will take a garden hose and rinse them out. It really does help the truck.

That is one of the main reasons I bought a Dodge. I love the way the grill gets up and out of the way when you open the hood so you can clean the radiator, innercooler, trans, oil, & power steering coolers.

Keep em clean boys and they will serve you well. 170K miles and running hard as ever.

I have always been afraid to use the pressure washer on it -- is there much danger of blowing a hole through the tubes? I want to wash out the road dust and oil accumulation of the previous owner and what I have added to it. The car wash wands are pretty strong around here, and I am paranoid ever since watching Tim Allen etch "Al is a Gal" into the studio wall on Home Improvement!

No it won't hurt it if you spray straight thru it, depending on psi you can bend the fins if you hit it at an angle. I use a 4000 psi @ 10gpm with a 15 degree tip and have not hurt mine or anything at work yet it will strip paint!

I'm using a 2000 PSI electric power washer with a rotating 0* power tip and it has hurt anything yet... I just stay back from the fins about 1 foot and your good...

Not only does the fuel cool the VP, the incoming fuel pressure is also used to move the advance in the pump. That is why a clogged filter or lose of fuel pressure causes the 0216 code. Fuel pressure is important!

You could also add a 2-3" flexable tube to divert fresh cool air to the VP. I think we may have an aftermarket idea!

I think FP is the most important gauge you can add to a CTD.

I never clean out my coolers, find it far simpler to run a screen in front of them. Bugs dry out and fall off rather than getting stuck in the core.
