Front tire almost falling off....

So I'm driving down the road today and I start to get a death wobble and the front left tire seems to be locking up. Grinding and shuddering. Can't find anything wrong so I pull tire to check it out. The brake caliper was rubbing a little on the actual rotor.....??? Put everything back together and continue. It gets worse. I'm trying to limp to my mechanic but the wheel is now at about a 30 degree angle canted in from the top. The whole tire/rotor/disc caliper setup is coming out from the axle shaft.... What happened? Did an axle clip snap and cause the axle to start backing out? This semi-floating thing is getting interesting. Sitting here waiting for the tow truck.... What kind of price are we looking at to get it all back together? Hub bearing, axle, etc.?

Unit bearing is bad. Or Hub Bearing whatever you want to call it. Get ready to pay for it. I got mine last year for $200 each, and that was from Napa with almost 40% off. Oh btw, Napa has lifetime warranty on them. No one else does(that I know of).
Later,
Tommy

Wheel Hub bearing assembly, O'reillys offers a 1 year warranty on theres i went thru about 5 on my old truck. that was a half ton and they were $160 ish. my 03 2wd was $480 from the dealer, PARTS only. its pretty easy to put on. well i am experianced in replacing them now . .

also sounds like you need to some brake components, Snap a photo if you get a chance.

Here's what it looked like before it got really bad. You can see it is canted about 10 degrees. In the end it was about 25 degrees. The brake rotor should be fairly snug against the dust shield. Note that's water and not brake fluid on the inner part of the tire. Either way, ugly:

The mechanic gave a cursory glance and thought it was a hub bearing. Waiting for the quote....

Took it to a local mechanic that has done some good work for me in the past. He says hub bearing, rotor, caliper, and possibly axle. I'm going to check the condition of everything on Monday....

It had to be growling for a while before it would get that bad and come apart.

I drive 165 miles to work on the highway. It really only did it about 20 miles into my commute. It went downhill from there pretty fast, though.... I'm going to see what price he quotes for the parts. Best deal I found is autopartswarehouse.com: $286 for the hub bearing, $73 a rotor, $57 a caliper with bracket, and $24 for pads. I'm going to put on the 2003-2006 brake setup since I'm there....

i just had to do both on my 01 within a month. the first one was from napa 377, second came from a dealer got him to price match carquest at 325. the first one did like yours. I just put a bearing in it. everything else looked good i need pads and rotors when i get the cash. the second one was starting to howl when i put it in. The first one started making noise on a thurs. by sat and about 100 miles on pickup. it completely failed and had to haul rig in. did the work myself about 3 hours a side.

AutoPartsWarehouse is a bunch of knuckleheads. They offer good prices and free shipping but customer service is TERRIBLE! Right after I placed the order I wanted to either cancel it or have it shipped overnight. They can't do ANYTHING to the order because the computer runs the show. 3 days later and still waiting to see if the computer canceled my order. I went with RockAuto and their customer service is GREAT! You pay for shipping but get awesome people on the other end of the telephone line more than willing to help you. Got the Timken for $330 delivered overnight air. Cheapest price in town was $380 at AutoZone. 2003-2007 brake calipers with mounting brackets for $63 from Carquest (A1 Cardone/TRW sets). Lifetime brake pads from Autozone for $25. Rotors from Autozone for $62. Labor cost ????

The guy at my local repair shop only charged me 2 hours for the whole deal. Hard to find a good shop nowadays and it looks like I found mine. I was honestly expecting $6-700 for labor and extraneous BS and was happy to walk out of there for $225 ($65 for the tow and $150 for labor). Drove home, put the right side rotor, caliper, and pads on (once I figured out how to do it) and it drives like a dream. What I originally thought were ball joint issues were left hub problems. Ball joints are tight for now. What's next?

quick question you said you went to 3rd gen rotors? does this mean you cant run your factory 16inch spare? might check on that and upgrade to a full size spare if you have not already. . .

I have all 17" rims. 4 from an '06 H2 Limited Edition and the spare is a regular H2 with the BFG A/T on it. Doesn't fit in my spare tire carrier, though. The new brakes stop 1000 times better than the smaller ones. Night and Day. Highly recommend this easy swap when you do your front brakes (after you get 17" or larger rims...).
