Have you had the rear drums turned? My rear drums were the cause of a wooble when they heated up due to them being out of round. Try switching them left for right. If it goes away temporarily you are on the right track. For me it was definately the rears.

slayerfish,

Since your right there in Aurora, CO why don't you scoot over to ATS and ask Darren if you can drive one of their trucks that has the EGR brakes all the way around. My truck stops like a Ford. I think I had about $1300 into the parts and a day for the fronts and a day for the rears, but I haven't touched them in over 30K and they are still at 60% Like I always say pay now or pay more later. Seriously though, go for a ride and you'll see what I mean.

When I did mine I checked all over the place and although I don't remenber all the details found out that the Rotors that Auto Zone has are the same brand that are included in some of these high priced brake kits you can buy but at half the price.

slayerfish,
Check advanceauto.com for rotors. I got 2 fronts for my 2X '01 3500 for $106 shipped. The store has them for $86 each but the online only price was cheaper. I also changed the calipers @ $75 each and a set of PFCM pads. I got the calipers at the local Advance Auto store (luckily in stock) and the pads at Auto Zone.
My truck had a terrible pulsation and I knew it was in the left front rotor. Stops real smooth now and its a hundred times better than my 96 1500 ever thought of.

While you are in there looking at the rears, you might as well throw in some GM wheel cylinders. Great mod on the cheap!

Yes, Napa #4637337, $13 each.
This number will cross over at most auto parts stores.

Take the experts advice on the rear brake upgrade. What a difference in bringing the Mighty CTD to a halt. My local Napa was out, but Auto Zone had them for the same price.

turn your rotors and drums, replace the pads and shoes. if you buy new rotors, they have to be turned, they are not true out of the box.

I got a 99 & desperately know your pain. I go through brakes like crazy. I buy my rotors from Napa for about 55 bucks, made in Canada. I run the Napa Ceramix Pads 100 bucks. I take them apart about once a month & scrape them on concrete
to get the glazing off of them. Napa always replaces them for me even though I have a 4 wheel drive. Nice to have friends in low places. You could probably adjust your back brakes one click everyday. That is the reason for all the brake trouble with these 98's & 99's, the back brakes won't adjust up like they should. Oh yeah, always uses some lithium lube or grease at least on your sliding surfaces between the caliper & the mounts. I usually rub mine with some sand paper just tomake them slick as possible. I do have a loud slamming type noise in the left front wheel when I get on the brakes hard. It has done this for years with different calipers, hoses, etc. Anybody know what may be causing this?

The only time I recommend turning the front rotors is if they are gouged, usually from running pads too far down. If they are warped it will come right back. For the price of having them turned it's not much more to just replace them. Both my rigs have over 200k on the stock rotors, never turned, four sets of pads on the 2500, six on the 3500.

Hey Infidel,I'll turn the rear DRUMS, not the rotors!I too have found that turning rotors is a waste of time and moola-they just warp again.
