Front Hub/Bearing Assembly Rebuilding- 2002 2WD
As you may know from some of my other threads, I recently had to replace my front right hub assembly on my 2002 Dodge 2500 2WD because of bad bearings. Since the bearings were bad, I had to replace the whole hub assembly and could not find it at local shops and had to buy it at the dealer, $250! My front left bearing will eventually go bad, and I would like to repair my old bearings in my old hub while I have some time and hopefully save some money.
My main question is: is this practical and doable? It appears there is a snap ring holding the bearings in. It looks like I could remove the snap ring on the old hub, punch out the old bearings from the outside inwards (it looks like there is two sets); determine the Timken part number and order new Timken bearings, and some how press the bearings back into the hub and put the snap ring back in.
What other things should I be aware of when “rebuilding” the hub? Anything special about the seals? It looks pretty simple, and I am hoping to save some money and have a “hub in rotation.” I just don’t understand why the hub/bearing assembly is a whole unit and not separate. Thanks for the help.

That's pretty cheap. IIRC, my old roommate paid $400 for his hub from the dealer. I don't think you can rebuild them but you migh as well try. If you can, you could make a fortune selling rebuild kits.

I went to the dealer today because I am hearing some rumbling in the front and my tires are wearing funny. $300 for each hub. On the print breakdown they had on the computer and the parts list shown, there were no replacement bearings in the hub. Only the hub. They tried to do a locator, and couldn't find a single dealer in the area that had the hubs in stock. I don't want to have to pay the labor rates up here either. Has anyone looked at the hub to actually see if the bearings can be removed or seen if the bearing is available? I think it could be done, but I don't have the resources to pull apart and not have parts available. Oh, ya, I am in Wisconsin now.
