Flickering 4x4 Indicator light

I know I've seen this covered before, but search turned up nothing?
My 4x4 dash light is coming on while in 2x4. Not staying on...just flickering on & off?
It has stayed on, while in 2x4 one time only...after coming out of 4x4.
Anyone know the cause/fix??

R&R the sender on the transfer case. $21.
I think I should have painted or coated the exterior first.

When mine was doing that I changed the switch and it did not help. I then checked the wiring to the switch and found that it had rubbed through in one spot and would "short" itself out and turn on the light especially after hitting a good bump.

Check the wires carefully. Mine were also broken inside of the insulation and the light would not come on when in 4X4 - only flash in 2X4 or 4X4. I ended replacing the wires from the connector near the rad to the connector on the diff. The switch was fine. To check the light operation - jump the two wires together and the light should come on.

Thanks guys. I remembered about changing out the sender, but thought mine was acting more like a short in the system...just could not remember what I had casually read about checking it, as I did not have a problem at the time.
