Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

Standard is a paper element, Stratapore is a finer filtering media, fiberglass I think. Finer is better, IMO.

DCWM,
It's more like economy vs. premium. ;D
Both good filters, but the Stratopore is better. I saw cutaways of both a while back and I would go with the Stratophore if I bought Fleetguard filters. ;D
(I buy Amsoil filters myself)

I guess I should check and see what NAPA offers, anyone use NAPA filters in the CTD?

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

I was informed by Cummins rep that Stratapore was designed for synthetic oil (finer micron). Overall better filtering than standard.

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

I was just checking out the Fleet Guard site and now I know why Cummins recommends Fleet Guard, besides it being a decent filter. This is what appears at the bottom of the page:
Fleetguard Inc. © 2003
A Cummins Company

Good, bad, or indifferent, ???.

Chris

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

Just remember you have a $35,000 truck, so why skimp out on an oil filter? Get the best you can and at all costs stay away from Fram.

But what do I know, I just paid $120 for tranny fluid from Mopar. :'(

DB

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

I use the Sratapore. Better of the two.

For all you guys buying Fram, Napa, K&N, Amsoil, ect. Just remember this. If your filter element falls apart (and I have seen it on a Cummins) and the dealer see's a non approved filter on your engine then forget the $3000 plus price tag being taken care of by DC. I'm not saying you have to buy only Fleetgaurd since there is other approved filters. Oh and if you fall out of the 100,000 mile warranty then feel free to install what ever you chose. ;D

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

The issue with the oil filters is the high pressures on startup with the newer 24valve engines. That is most likely when the filter media will fail. When the media fails the peaces clog up the cooling nozzles. (I don't have to tell you what happens after that)

That seamingly good priced filter wont seem like such a good idea when you foot the bill for the new 24valve 5.9.

DB

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

Katoom,
I was worried about what you're talking about and contacted Amsoil before I put their filter on my truck. They assured me that their filter does not suffer from the problems that Fram, and possibly other filters, do. I was fully prepared to NOT put the Amsoil filter on, until I got that info from them.

Chris

Re:Fleetguard (standard or STRATAPORE??)

The Fleetguard filter [better one] has micro glass media. Simply takes out more dirt. Part of my job used to be oil/filter performance on a large fleet of Diesel [mining] equipment. With the right oil and a microglass filter our engin life almost doubled....pretty impresive. From advarage 9,000 hours between overhauls to better than 16,000 hours between overhauls.
As far as oils, use a premium oil that uses a hydro clear refining process. A couple of years ago that was Conoco and Chevron, maybe more now. Syn. oil is a whole different story.
