Need a bit more info then that. i.e. what brand of oil? It could be a Diesel oil that is also rated for gas engines.... or, you just dumped in a gas oil and want to change it out.

Currently I am running a 15w-40 synth.

Thunder, it's Motomaster Formula 1 SAE 10w30 100% synthetic. The bottle has a seal "For gazoline engine".
My owner's manual states use only oils conforming to API Service CF-4 or CG-4. A sulfated ash limit is specified for lubrication oil used in Cummins engines. A maximum of sulfated ash content of 1.85 mass is recommended for all oil used used in the engine.
For 24 valves a SAE viscosity grade of engine oil for the expected ambient temp. range should be selected. I know the 10W30 if good for the temp. range that we will be getting. We drop to 44f* last again.
Is the oil I bought suitable for Diesel?
Do I need to drop another $90 worth of oil? This is confusing

If you want to go synthetic go out and get some 5w40 Rotella T synthetic. Runs about $20 a gallon in the US and will last you a good 7k miles or so with a light foot (and it is rated for Diesel and Gas engines as well).

Stay away from "gaZoline"

Any oil we use in our Cummins MUST have the -4 or it's NOT approved for use in our trucks. I'm guessing the 10-30 doesn't cut it. I use a PetroCan synthetic I get from PetroCan truck stops, it's called Duron 5W-40 and costs about $24 a jug of 4L.

Co-op makes a REALLY good diesel engine oil thats Cummins rated. 0w40 CO-OP® D-MO* SL - Heavy-duty Synthetic Diesel Motor Oil.

http://www.wetaskiwincoop.com/Petrol...um_specs.htm#2

$5.00 a liter too. Good deal. Has a pour point of -57 Celsius. Man, I hate winter.

OH man! dump the Crappy Tire oil. Good motor oil is the cheapest insurance you can get for your engine. If you want to save a few bucks, look up the bulk lubricants dealers in the yellow pages and make a few calls. Most will be quite happy to sell you good quality oil by the 20 liter pail. For Winter in Ottawa I'd really think about that 0W-40 synthetic. For the rest of the year, 15W-40 from Chevron, Shell, Petro Canada etc.

Randy.
