First Oil Change
Hi fellers this is the first time I have had too change my own oil in this thing and its a different animal than all the gassers I have always done. So I know our truck take like what 10qts of oil in the crank case and a quart in the filter. So I bought 3 gallons of delo and filled according and it looks as though I might have over filled it but I don't know and don't want too drop oil if I don't gotta.

Sweet thats what I thought just checking thanks all. Going too start doing my own now tired of paying too have it done and my shop is finally cleaned out.

I've got a 98.5 RAM 2500 with 134 thousand miles on it and I live in Canada. I'm about to make my first oil change. I check the manual and it recommended to use 10W30 for temp. 70F* or lower. Is that right? Or should I stick to 15W40? Temperature here is hovering around 70F* during day time but last night it dropped to 40F* and it's going to get colder as get in the Fall and Winter obviously....What do you think, should I put in 10W30?

If it helps, I run 15w40 in summertime, and down to about 0 or -10C. usually I am due for an oil change by then anyway, and I go to 0w40 for the winter months, changing back at the first oil change after the freeze is over for the season.

10-30 might be more of light duty oil, but will do fine. I favor the 5-40 or the 0-40 syn if it gets brutally cold. The syn will flow easier than straight dino oil.

Wait wait wait. You guys throw in the extra quart? I've never read of anyone doing that before which is why I'm surprised! My truck takes 11.5 qts and I'm always wishing I could dish the last little bit. Looks like its going in from now on!

What do y'all in the southern states run in the winter? I'm in North Georgia and it gets somewhat cold here in the winter. I do most of my driving to and from work about 1hr each way before dawn and after sunset in winter.

I still run 15W40 in the winter and I see weather as cold as -20, to -30 Fahrenheit. Thinner oil is easier on the engine when starting, but once it's up and running and warmed up (especially over the period of an hour), it's a moot issue.
