Filters - Fuel and Oil - Recommendations please
#31
Valvoline Premium Blue and Fleetguard over here on my truck. I get my stuff at Southern Plains Cummins in Oklahoma City, OK. I change the fuel filter every other oil change which is about 20,000 (10K * 2)...opps..did I say that? No problems here....yet!

Your answer depends on your oil of choice. Fuel Filters @ 10,000 miles seems to be the accepted norm.
5,000 on store bought oil is good preventative MX. On synthetics from specialty lubrication companys (Amsoil, Royal Purple, etc.) you can go 10,000 miles on oil & filter (Fleetguard Stratopores only, please).
These are conservative mileages, but easy to remember and cheap insurance if wanting lots of miles out of your engine. JMHO.
Yes - 15w-40 and CI-4 rated.

I'm strictly Fleetguard too, sometimes from the Cummins dealer, but mostly from the International truck dealer across the street from my work.....we have an account there
but I'm useing full synthetic on 10,000km intervals, and still spin on a new oil filter @ 5,000km.
I've just come into a Dealer Service Manual on cdrom for my '98 1500-3500 trucks, and whichever other years are encompassed. Service schedule A is 12,000kms on oil in a standard duty application and schedule B is severe duty which everything is cut in half......6,000kms interval oil.
There is an obscene amount of information in this thing......

From the oil analysis I did on Amsoils, 15-40, Marine Diesel Oil at 10,000 miles... without a filter @ 5,000.... I was very impressed with results. I'm guessing todays cleaner diesel engines are just that... cleaner. Also guessing 15 yrs ago, filters were not as good AND had to work a lot harder.
Just trying to give 'futchd' alternatives for his decision
I tried to cut that 10,000 mile filter open to see how it looked. Problem was I got so many metal shavings inside it was hard to tell . Inside folds did look pretty healthy.

According to my owners manual, if you regularly drive less than ten miles, you should change the oil every 3750 miles. i'm using rotella oil, and i live only a mile away from work. is 3750 miles a very conservative number, or would i be ok extending the intervals?

Does your engine come up to full operating temperature?

That type of driveing is considered severe duty even if you never tow anything. According to the service manual.

I'll throw another 2-cents in:
I use Rotella T and Fleetguard (Stratapore) or WIX (NAPA Gold) filters. I'm at the northern end of the Great Sonoran Desert (sand) so I change oil filter at 3500 and fuel at 7000.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has bought a Napa Gold filter latley. The last two filters I bought no longer state "Wix" anywhere on the packaging like they used to and there is no longer the wix logo on the filter. All my Napa Gold filters Ive bought over the last few years had the logos but not now. Just wondering if Wix is still making them and if anyone else has noticed.

On the Oil, a poll on this site showed Rotella as #1, Dello #2, I believe. Both are redaily avaiable and quality products. I would stick with the stated change oil recomendation, whether regular oil or synthetic.
Genos is the most popular place to get the Oil/fuel filters; Good price, easy to buy on line.
Sams carries the Rotella in a (6) gallon box, proably as good as it gets.
Good luck!!
