Question filters

I'm new to the diesel world and recently bought my first CTD. (Why did'nt someone tell me how cool these trucks were sooner?)
I have read alot on this site about fuel/oil filters and I have a few questions.
1. would you recommend Wix filters ?. They are more accessable to me than the Fleetguards, unless someone knows of a national parts store that carries them.

2. can someone direct me to a link on how to prime the fuel system correctly after changing the fuel filter? I own a couple diesel backhoe, tractors and I hope it is easier than it is with them. Oh, yeah , No, I don't have an owners manual, I guess I should get one huh?
I took my truck to an authorized CTD shop and they quoted me a price of $160.00 to change the filters and oil !! I think I will do it myself after that ! Thanks .

well to be honest 160.00 for both filters and oil is a pretty good price too me. Granted the difference in currency is a factor. But remember these engines use 10-11 quarts of oil. So you need too buy 3 gallons of oil. And the filters aint all that cheap either. Granted it will be cheaper than 160 bucks but from what i hear it is a chore to prime the fuel system.

But too answer your question...any NAPA should have fleetguard.

Hey welcome to the wonerful world of spark deficient internal combustion! It is pretty cool!

My Local Napa don't carry Fleetguard, I have to buy online or from Columbus Equipment. *I highly recommend Fleetguard*

You can also look here for your closest Cummins Parts House.

Cummins Parts & Service Locator

I buy all my filters at the same parts counter as the "Big Guys".

How far away are these folks?

I get all my filters from Genos Garage I recomment the Maint. Kit they sell. If you go to NAPA you can get all the filters and the oil for about $90.00. I have a fellow Mech. that works at dodge He says the only filters to use are Fleetguard, and Wix.

3 gallons of Rotella-T = $21.00
1 Fleetgaurd oil filter = $10.00
1 Fleetgaurd fuel filter = $13.00

Total = $44.00 and a little of my time. ($31.00 for just an oil change, I don't change the fuel filter at every oil change).

As a general rule, I won't pay someone else for labor that I'm perfectly capable of doing myself.... but that's me.

what are you talking about? Drive over to Cummins in West Ed. Oil filters are: $12, fuel filters are $21. Good quality oil can be had at Walmart - Mobile Delvac 1300 $ 12.00/gallon or U.F.A. - Chevron Delo 400 runs $ 11.90/gallon. Well less than $160.Change you oil yourself guys - most dealerships have kids changing oil whether its a diesel or gasser.

Oh yeah, I personally stay away from Wix - they may very well be a well built filter BUT they are not on the "approved" filter list. If you want to retain engine warranty run Fleetguard or Mopar.

Not neccessarly. There are 2 different dealers/ shops, as mentioned above, and neither carry Fleetguard oil fliters. I called every diesel shop in a 30 mile radius that was in the phone book, and none of them carried Fleetguard in stock. They said that I had to order it, and they could only order a case at a time. TOOOOOO many filters for me (24 or so) so now I guess its time for Geno's.
