I was drving my truck on the interstate at about 75 MPH when I began to lose power. I floored the pedal with no increase in RPM. After a minute, the engine came back to life. I also noticed that the engine would surge or "pulsate" while cruising at highway speeds just before the power loss. This happened a few more times during my interstate trip and has not done it since. It also never did it while just driving at low speeds locally. There is only 51,000 miles on the truck. I changed to fuel filter 3000 miles ago and also installed a low fuel pressure warning light. The light never came on during the power loss. I checked the error codes and it showed P0216 - Injection Pump Timing Failure. I'm hoping its not my VP44 pump. Can anyone shed some light on this problem?

hope for the best plan for the worst..... plan on a new vp now before it leaves u stranded....some have gotten by for a year or two bfore it fails completly

The 0216 DTC is an electonic failure typically of the PC board in the VP44 ECU that is mounted on top of the pump, itself. It may last another day or another month.....either way, complate failure is inevitable. You will have to replace the VP44 before it leaves you stranded. What year is your truck? If it is an 02, you may still be covered under warranty. Fill out your sig so we know what you driving.

Yeah, sorry from me too, but P0216 is the bad one. You can clear it and it may not come back for a bit but the VP44 is done. You need a new one. Period.

hope for the best but plan on that not being good enough. I had a P0216 for 13 months, life support provided by FASS, before the VP-44 finally took a dirt nap.

I am willing to lay money down that your VP-44 is gone.....i have seen too many do the exact same thing.....PM me, i got some good hook ups for pumps.....and ill talk you through the install if you want.....let me know...its not a hard job really...just time consuming...

Sorry to hear about your problems. Got the PO216 last friday. Had the codes run at a local Advance auto parts.I have a Banks Big hoss installed, along w/ the other basic add-ons.My truck had been surging, or jerking at highway speeds, and seemed to be bogging at low RPM's. Check engine light kept coming on, for a while I could get it to go off by disconnecting the batteries overnight. Then it started coming on Immediatly after I began driving. I have 85000 miles, I was informed today that dodge will cover the vp44 replacement, even w/ the Banks stuff installed. The service writer asked about the Banks stickers on the door. He was a little leary of saying anything about warranty. I was up front w/ them about my mods, and it seems to have payed off. I feel like the guy could have been a jerk if he wanted to. The only thing I'm concerned about is the fact that they are telling me that the lift pump is O.K. I thought the lift pump always went first. Anyone seen this happen before? Anything I should look for after I get my truck back? Thanks.

well.....there are "Ways" to get a lift pump replaced under wnty..... I think that there can be a code set if you unplug the LP. Also...you can pull the LP off and loosen one of the stud on the top and reinstall....this will cause it to suck air and not want to start......but these are dishonest and I am in no way suggesting anyone to do these........

Not at all. Because the dealer is going to be 100% honest with you when they tell you that your warranty is void because of a fuel pressure gauge that caused the pump to go out.

Pretty close. Actually the 0215 code is the electronics. The 0216 code is pump timing and is usually caused from the high pressure chamber seals leaking, but can be caused form other mechanical problems inside the pump.

dumb temporary solution is to try turning key off/on while symptom occurs. Usually it resets VP lag and truck will respond immediately and take off like scalded rabbit. VP is on the way out but mine limped along for 65000 miles before I got funds to replace it..... Good Luck!!

Looking for a new VP44 anyone know what the best place to get one is? What about the Diesel Injections Hot Rod pump? Is it worth it??
