erratic trany shifting
I need some suggestions with my 96 3500:<br><br>When accelerating past 80km/hr (around 50-55 miles), the motor starts reving, rpm's erratic, as if the trany's shifting in and out or up and down out of gears. This goes on until I get faster than 110 km/hr or so, then it runs well.<br><br>Let me know what you think.

Re:erratic tranny shifting
My truck is doing the exact same thing but at various speeds. It seems to be slipping in and out of overdrive for a split second and jumps about 2-300 rpm.<br><br>Have you figured out the problem? Let me know, I'm stumped.<br><br>Steve

Re:erratic trany shifting
It has something to do with your torque converter lock-up solonoid. I believe you need to get it to a dealer for a reflash. There have been several posts on this subject in the past including where to find the TSB that Dodge put out. I don't have time to search for it but I'm sure someone here will know where to find it. This is a pretty common problem....

Thanks a million for replying. I did a search and found the TSB. Here's the link if anyone needs it.<br><br>http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/21-08-00.htm <br><br>Steve<br>

These links may be applicable too if anyone else is experiencing similar problems.<br><br>http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2000/21-02-00.htm<br><br>http://dodgeram.info/tsb/1999/18-02-99.htm

Re:erratic trany shifting
I wonder if one of these tsb's would solve my problem? Mine will go through the gears fine until it hits 3rd. Right after shifting into 3rd, it will shift to 4th way to early in the rpm range. The motor boggs down pretty bad. Or maybe adjusting the tranny bands might solve it? I hate to take it to the dealer.

Marky Mark: Did you do the APPS recalibration on your truck? This can help a lot and is easily done. Just unhook the batteries fo more than 30mins and hook them up again. Turn key to "on" nad depress the accelerator pedal to WOT slowly and let it return. Turn key to "off" nad you are good to go. <br><br>HTH<br><br>AlpineRAM

The PCM is located right behind the air filter on the firewall and has 3 plugs. <br>I had to clean a lot of contacts on my truck to get everything back to proper operation. Took me a little more than a day and about 2 bottles of contact cleaner and 1 pot of dielectric grease to have it done right (meaning going over every contact I could find ).<br>Since these trucks rely on the electronic control the electric system should be kept in the best possible shape. <br><br>AlpineRAM

Re:erratic trany shifting
Here is another thing I noticed. When I start the truck, all the little lights in the instrument panel (airbag, check engine, etc.) light up & then go away. Then the "check guages" light comes back on with a chime for just a couple seconds. Does this mean anything?

Re:erratic trany shifting
Mine does the same when it needs an oil change. Look at the oil pressure gauge and see if it comes up right during the ding. It can also be voltage. <br><br>AlpineRAM
