Engine oil use?

Engine oil use?
Not sure if this is the right place to post this question. My 2001 24v cummins engine burns about one liter of oil every 6000 kilometers is this normal on the new 24v engines? I used to own a 12v cummins and it never used any oil at all; even when trailering 10000 pounds. Anyone have any info? ???

Re:Engine oil use?
I haven't used a drop of oil that I've noticed, other than a couple of drops through the vent tube.... running John Deere Plus 50 15w40.

Jonessmith it would help if you were to give us a few more details-total miles, idle time, tow time, oil used etc. Did you buy it new or was it used with out a history, has it ever been hot-240+. PK

P Kennedy: Truck has 36,000 Kilometers about 22500 miles, I never idle more than five minutes and that only after trailering. I tow a 10000 pound fifth wheel on weekends and two, week long trips a year. The truck was puchased new from chyrslers and uses about half of the safe mark in oil about 0.9 to 1.0 liters which is 1.05 us quarts over a 6000 km or 3750 miles oil change interval using regular 15W40 Walmart diesel engine oil; just did a change and am now using Petro Canada Duron Synthetic 5w40 Diesel engine oil. The truck has never over heated or been too hot always in the normal range on the guage.

Re:Engine oil use?
Okay this helps a little and maybe try a couple of things. When driving normally loaded or empty what kind of shift points are you using (high or low), if driving around what rpm are you normally maintaining (2300-2700). When adding oil do you ever let it go down to the add mark, some engines stabilize at different levels. Some engines will use oil depending on the brand (additives vary). When pulling your trailer do you maintain higher rpms or let it pull down (1650) before shifting. Idling other than cooldown procedures do you idle it up (1100-1400) or have you noticed oily wetness around tip of exhaust pipe. Realisticly these engines do not completely break in until 60-80k, mine just started to loosen up at 85k. I used the Duron as a intermediate oil between the petroleum and total synthetic which was installed at 50k, oil level drops to add line at about 18-22k-oil change done at 25k. PK <br>
