Engine died after body work
#17
The passenger side door was replaced as the old one was rusted out on the bottom. Complete replacement. That's what's got me baffled... there shouldn't be ANY reason for them to come anywhere close to anything fuel related. And with a simple replacement there shouldn't have been any welding goin' on either.

Well, in the never-ending saga of fuel problems...
Went to start the truck Friday AM after it had sat for a couple days and it started, but then died just like it did at the body shop. Didn't have time to mess with it at the time. On my way to my Dr's appointment, (in the CAR!), I called the truck shop and told them I'd bring it in to them Monday morning. So this morning, just for the heck of it, I try to start it again... nothin', not surprisingly.
Just because I am disgusted with the whole thing and not in a good mood to begin with, I open the valve on the filter housing that you're supposed to use to bleed off water. Get some fuel out of it and shut the valve. Get back in the truck and it starts right up like nothing was ever wrong! Never even missed a beat, just started right up and idled smoothly.
So it's at the shop right now. They called this afternoon and at that point hadn't found anything despite running a pressure test on the lift pump, (it was ok), checking the check valve operation and putting pressure to the fuel line hoping to find a leak that would make it lose a prime. They're gonna leave it sit for a few days and try to replicate the problem. But I have NO idea why opening the bleeder valve, without the motor running, would make a dead engine suddenly run again.
Glad I have other vehicles!

Sounds like the fuel is backing out of the system when it sits for a while. Prolly just coincidence that it started after you cracked the water bleed, would have worked if you kicked the tire too.
You didn't say anything about a fuel leak....and it would have been obvious so I'm thinking lift pump but only the one way valve part of it. If your getting air in the filter section it'll run until it sucks bubble then die. Pretty much like every other time I change my filter.

Well, got the truck back from the shop almost a week ago now and it's sat in the barn all that time since it's return. Started right up fine today with no problem.
What they SAY was the problem, was the fuse that powers the fuel heater was blown. How the heck this affects the starting and running of the truck is beyond me, but it's been running fine ever since. I could understand if it was cold and the fuel gelled, but it hasn't been below 50 in all the time we've had the problem.
Just thought I'd give an update.
