I run 15/40 year round and I plug in when it gets cold. I have block heater,battery blanket, and oil pan heater. If you are going some place that you can not plug-in the lower weight oil will not do you any good. I like my f-250 unplug for 12 hours at 30 below and it started after 3 attempts.

To further confuse matters, I just learned on the "other" board that Amsoil also makes a good diesel-rated 10W-40 synthetic. This would be another good choice for cold climes, and is somewhere between their 5W-30 and 15W-40 in price. You have to look on the Amsoil page, 'cause they list this one under "automotive" for reasons you won't understand after you see all the diesel ratings it meets.
