Dodges new fix for transfer pump
#47
The campaign pump from Cummins and the Vulcan kit seem to solve most peoples probelms. I run 12.5 at idle. 9 WOT. Many run more with the same set-up. I suspect you could run the same set-up with the GEN 3's. At $65 a pump and easy access to change it. I can live with that.
My condolences to those who line at 0 and below. That cold is hard, although our heat creates some issues.
I have not herad anything bad on the Cummins camapign pumps.
I do know that I feel better seeing adequate pressure to the VP44.

I myself replaced my own transfer pump with an In-tank pump, and also changed the Overflow Valve on the IP return fuel line banjo fitting. The Overflow valve helps to maintain fuel pressure and will cause a drop in pressure if it is leaking. After changing mine and without adding anything else, I have a constant 11 psi at idle and it never gets below 8 psi under load. It's not that expensive so if I were you, I'd at least try this before investing in all the extras. JM2C. It's worth a shot, not to undermine all you physicists posting to this thread.

So where is this overflow valve & how do you change it?
How do you know if it is bad?
To the earler question about he campaign pump, it is from the Cummins dealers and seems to work bettter, last longer than the OEM carters. If you do a search, you can get the part number, or someone can chime in. I have not seen any complaint on thse, but I do not see evrytning.
Lift pumps & fuel pressure to the VP have been the single biggest issue with Gen 2's. The above mentioned switch is just another ppart of that situation.

The plot thickens
So I went through the typical VP failure assosiated with a bad lift pump as well. Previously I had installed a frame mounted auxillary pump from BD to help prevent this situation. The dealer put in the in-tank pump so now the frame mounted units role is reversed. Now, rather than pulling fuel from the tank to help the stock unit it is receiving preasurized fuel to pass on to the VP. Now is where it gets weird. Just installed a preasure gauge this weekend to keep an eye on things to help prevent another such pleasant experience and I'm getting 21 psi at idle. This is a mechanical gauge using an isolator so I was a bit skeptical. So I threw on another mech. gauge on the fuel line before the isolator and got the same numbers. Preasure drops only a few pounds under exceleration. Might be something to concider for those not wanting to spend the money for a Pass system or the likes.

You can get the campaign pumps from your local Cummins dealer as part #4090046 (if they ask tell them it is for a school bus). The last two I bought were $56 ea. If this is the route you choose to go, either run one by the tank and one on the block at very least relocate back closer to the tank. If this doesn't work for me I will be going with either the Walbro or Fass. I won't play this stupid game anymore......

Vulcan Kit is a good fix, Glacier 391 has a better fix (and ends the VP44 worry). Add (any) other kits you care to at this point.
If you don't have a fuel pressure guage of some sort, SHAME ON YOU.
If you don't change the OE LP @ 75K no matter what, SHAME ON YOU.
The Campagin Pump is a BandAid along with all of the other ideas Dodge and Co. have come up with IMO.
I thank you.

That's RIGHT
Dodge and CO., have no problem leaving their customer base in the grease.
The LP campaign program should be offered to everyone having this problem.
I opted for the Glacier Fix after due consideration and havn't looked back since, after 4 Carter LPs, no more worries.

In-Tank LP
I have an in-tank LP. I installed a FP guage about 6 months ago. Its been reading 15 to 16 psi at idle, and will go down to about 10 when I'm really stepping on it. Just two days ago, it started dropping - now its at about 11, and goes down to 5 or 6 at WOT.
I'm scheduled to have a secondary in-line pump (a Bosch) installed for about $400 in a couple of days. Until then, I'm not even driving it. It seems to me that the key to a healthy VP-44 is to have good FP (15 / 10), not any lower than that.
Just my unsolicited, but honest opinion.......Nitecap.

I could not buy a campaign pump. Two places told me the part number is good but is being discontinued. Others didn't stock it, and none would sell it to me without an engine number from a school bus. I decided to go with a walbro. But, the stock repalcement is available from Advance Auto or Autozone for $135 - 160. These come with 1 year warranty as "Master" brand. Looks like they have Airtex part number.

sorry to break up the party fellas. pressure vs. flow vs. resistance yadda yadda yadda. morral of the sorry is if the VP44 doesnt get enough fuel it goes BYE BYE. i need ur help guys dodge knows thier LP system is garbage (either one) and they dont want to hear it anymore now that all CTDs 02 and older r off warranty. i say edited by admin . why wasnt there a recall? visit my thread at 02 dreaded dead pedal, and post all responses there.

My 02 was retrofitted with the intank pump and I had about 7psi on idle and between 3 and 4 psi at wot. So I bought a campaign pump and plumbed it in and use the oil pressure port on the oil filter housing as a trigger it works great. I have to upgrade my FP gauge as it only goes to 15psi and it is pegged. I can't pull it below 15 either but I am afraid of what the campaign pump might do to the intank pump so I am installing a Vulcan DrawstrawII and plumbing it in ahead of the intank pump, that way both pumps are happy and if the one in the tank pukes I still got a pump to run on or vise versa

I experimented with the fuel system today and put the results here:

Maybe it will help those who are looking for a better solution to the lift pump woes.

I had a bad Carter lift pump plus a bad VP44 (fuel pressure was 8 psi idle/2 psi WOT, and I had a dead pedal.) I just finished installing my new FASS system and II HRVP44 last night, fired up the truck & drove it today, and I'm pleased to report that the truck has more power now than I'd hoped for from the HRVP44 and the fuel pressure is much improved at 14 psi idle/11 psi WOT. I'm taking my core charge money from turning in my old VP44 and ordering a pyrometer, boost gauge, and permanent fuel pressure gauge (I have a temporary one rigged up now) plus an a-pillar mount for them. I'm starting to think I've been bitten by the mod bug...
