dodge steering boxs, junk, taking poll on bad ones
??? question that has been bothering me,steering boxs on dodge trucks are horrible,i know of only 1 person that has not had his replaced in the first 80,000 miles, how many of you have had to have your steering boxs replaced? how many were warranty? this is a known problem with these trucks and dodge wont fork the bill,my 01 needs a new one now,my brotherinlaws 01 needs one,my one customer had replaced his 2 times already and is only at 75,000 miles on his, what can we do to get dc to pick these bills up?just wondering if anyone else is erked by this other than me, ;D

No problem out of my truck, but my buddied 00' 2500 lost is steering box wanty took care of it, with only 32,xxx miles on his truck. Warraty covered it and said that if he had run out of his 36,000 mile warr. that it would have costed about 800.00.

The box on my son's 96 Ram started leaking around 70,000. Dodge wanted over $900 for a new box with installation. I took it to a local garage and the guy pulled and replaced the seal for $150. Worked perfectly until he traded it this year. Same thing happened to my neighbor's Ram.

I work at a dodge dealer, can't say i haven't seen my share of them. 3-5 a week seems a little high,i would say it may be in the neighborhood of about 1 in 100, with most of the failures being leaking pitman shaft seals. Most of these boxes are replaced because it guarantees repair, and if its's under warranty,i would rather have a new box. However if your'e truck is not under warranty there is no reason to replace a whole box for just a pitman shaft seal. The seal is cheap at about $ 20. plus installation. If failure gets into the inards of the gear box,it would be advisable to replace the box. By the way Dodge steering box's are made by Saginaw(a General Motors Co) and are the same box's seen on hundreds of thousands of GM vehicles. Some of you may remember changing these pitman shaft seals also. If you are still eligible to purchase,or you already have a Chrysler service contract, it would be covered item up until the terms of the contract. I think at this point they were offering it for 7 yr 70000 miles. My best advice would be to check the price of the conract, see what is covered and for how long. And then see if it is worth the investment. I think one gear box is worth about half of the contact price, and there are alot more potential, high dollar parts that can go bad. TGCTD
