doa on side of road - p1693 and 234 - LP and VP44 shot
Truck died while pulling trailer today. Happened quickly - found myself pushing harder and harder on the pedal while the speed still bled off and engine died at 35 or so. Doesn't even pretend to start. P 1693 on the dash. Got the horse home and then went back with my reader. Only 234 overboost condition and no other codes. I was thinking a Lift pump maybe but than I saw an older thread about those two codes signalling the VP44? Kind of had a feeling that something was happening because on cold start today, engine hiccuped after it started and almost died. I was watching the oil pressure guage for build-up but the truck sure did shudder. I was parked on a slight upgrade but nothing I haven't done before. Then it ran fine.

I will be watching a waiting for this one. I too just had the 1693, 234 and 237 codes. I cleaned the MAP sensor and had the codes removed and nothing yet but I will be pulling my TT through the MTNS very soon and don't want any problems.
Good luck.
Good luck.

OK here it is at least partially. Dodge pulled a 230 code which they say is "transfer pump circuit out of range" - so at least a transfer pump. They also said it's possible the VP44 is fried but they won't know until they get fuel to it. $3300 if the VP44 is shot. $979 for a new transfer pump. Here's hoping. Makes me wonder a bit about the recurring 0234 code and if recurring overboost can also signal a failing transfer pump?

There pump is no better than any one elses. $1050 for the pump and $300 to put it on, any more is a rip-off. There going to put the intank lift pump on at that price. You can get a lot better pump for less money. A fass pump (no filter) for $430 and less than an hour to put it on. I can put a IP on in 2 hours, It took me 3 hour the first time I did one, and I was 15 years old at the time. J-BODY works at a dealership and he puts on the IP and OEM carter LP for $1800 out the door.

Interesting because they say I have an external lift pump mounted on the chassis. Bought the truck used a couple of years back, so now I'm wondering what it really has in it?

You could had the pump on the frame, but the $979 for their transfer pump, will be the intank model. Is there a cummins shop close to you? I would call them and get a quotwe on a IP&LP replacement.

I too would avoid the in-tank LP like the plauge. From what I've read it's not that great of a pump and provides marginal fuel pressure when new (I could be wrong here though). But the biggest drawback is all the work you have to do when it eventually does go bad. You can buy a Carter that puts out 18 psi for about $120 or so from Summit. And you could buy a spare and keep it under the seat. Still have less invested than the Dodge solution.

Yup, went down to chat with the dealer and the cummins tech kept getting the IP and LP confused. I knew what he meant but he didn't. Told them to stop work, paid $85 diagnosis fee and am having it towed home now. I can replace my stock Cummins pump on the block for $207 and pick up the pump locally tomorrow, but I'll probably look at a frame mount. Haven't been doing this stuff for 25 years so we'll see how everything works out. My tools are rusty and so am I but I've seen too much negatives on this forum to go the in-tank route. Definitely putting an fp gauge on even if (especially if) the VP is toast. Best price I've found for the Fass kit so far is $669. Got to figure there is a less expensive source, just haven't had time to dig yet.
By the way, the Dodge IP is on national back-order. Wonder why?

Haven't found one yet but just got back to the computer. Not going the dealer route. Gonna start with an LP then see what happens.

I think thats just a holley blue pump. (someone tell me if I'm wrong here) I have used several before. Not the best choice for a stand alone pump. You can get that pump for around $100 at autozone. You can get a stock carter, and mount it on the frame with a BD bigline Kit, but if I only wanted to do it once I think I would get the FASS. JMO
