dead throttle and white smoke

i have a 2002 dodge 4x4 with an auto transmission. when i start engine sometimes it runs rough and smokes white, i can restart engine and it will clear up. when i drive down the road engine will get a dead throttle, if i accelerate it will start skipping. i have to put in neutral and restart and engine will run fine for a couple of miles and do it again. it may do it 2 times or 4 times within a 8 mile strech. no check engine light comes on. change fluids and filters every 6000 miles. 80000 miles on engine. has been acting up for past 1600 miles. transmission has just started to act up, seems like tranny is sticking. when i take off it does not want to shift if i let off accelerator it will change gears. the scanner i have will only comunicate with caterpillar engines. i am fell like i can repair the problem if i had some help with someone knowledgeable with cummins engines. thanks

uuuhhh.....you might want to check fuel pressure at the filter housing. i think from my judgment that your lift pump killed the vp pump.

hope i'm wrong !!

cycle your key on and off 3 times and on the 3rd time leave it on and watch the odometer. it should show you your codes. Wait till it says done before you shut the key off again. if you get the p0216, thats your injection pump. and p1692 or p1693 (cant remember which) means that you have to take it to autozone or the dealership so they can read the other codes.

0500-speed sensor on rear differential, probably nothing, is easily set by spinning the rear tires in snow or mud.

P1757 Governor Pressure Above 3 PSI When Request Is 0 PSI
Transmission goveror pressure sensor or transducer, probably the reason for you tranny troubles, easily changeable, but you need to drop the pan.

P0460 Fuel Level Unit No Change Over Miles
Does your fuel level guage work properly? This code is saying it doesn't.

1693, the ever popular companion code telling you there is a code.

As to the skipping, rough runnin, do you have a fuel pressure guage?
Your lift pump is probably going, and if left unattended, can take out your injection pump (VP44, sometimes called the VP$$)

White smoke is normal for the first start of the day, if you live in a cold climate, if not, then it's a sign your VP44 timing is slipping.
