Dana 80 rear...shims or crush sleeve?
My pinion seal has just gone south. Just wondering if this is an easy fix or do I have to get a new crush sleeve for it?
Thanks,
kyot

If it is a crush sleave it must be replaced everytime you undo the pinion nut - they are a 1 shot deal. If it does not use a crush collar then there is nothing to worry about.

Kyot, Dana/Spicer axles don't usually use crush sleeves, at least I've never seen one and I've rebuilt alot of Dana 44's, 60's, & 70's. You usually see crush sleeves on GM corp. 12 bolts, Ford 9", etc.. Dana's usually use shims for adjustments on pinion depth and pre-load. I just looked in my service manual to be sure and your Dana 80 should be the 286RBI and it is shimmed. Make sure you torque the pinion nut to the propper spec. 470 ft lbs., new nut is preferred or loc-tite the old one, after you change the seal.

Actually, some Dana axles have used them over the years - mind you it is somewhat rare and seemed to be in axles mostly manufactured for Chrysler. They did it to cut manufacturing time by not having to shim for proper pinion pre load.

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I know I have to replace a crush sleeve.....just want to know what's in there before I open it up. I've done 44's, 60's, & 70's but this will be the first time opening up a Dana 80.
MVIEIRA...thanks for the torque spec.
CTD NUT...where's Caister Center?

I borrow the torque wrench from my buddy's 4x4 shop. It will do 600 ft lbs
The handle is almost 48" long!
Thanks for the link, Barney....that's the other info I was looking for.
My cousin photocopied the section from the FSM at the dealership for me as well.
Shouldn't be any trouble at all.

You can also get a tool called a "torque multiplier" It goes on the end of the torque wrench and multiplies your settings 10x. Very cool
