Here is a couple paragraphs that I took out of bulletin #4021541 about the updated lift pump. Feel free to ran and rave about this and why we are getting the shaft.

Cummins Inc is conducting a campaign of ISB engines Model year '98-'02 installed in school buses, transit buses and emergency vehicles in the United States and Canada due to a possible problem with the fuel lift pump. Cummins Inc has determined that a small percentage of these engines may experience a stall condition. Approximately 43,000 engines are involved, the vast majority of which are school bus engines.

Within the campaign population, Cummins Inc will replace the fuel lift pump with an improved design at no cost to the customer. Cummins Inc will also at no cost to the customer, install a fuel pressure switch coupled with the existing check engine light to warn drivers of low fuel pressure conditions. In addition to replacing the fuel lift pump and installing the fuel pressure switch, under a new Customer Asurance Plan Cummins Inc will replace all fuel injection pumps manufactured between Jan. 2001 and Dec. 2003 due to fuel pump timing bushing failures which result in Fault Code 368. All fuel injection pumps that do not qualify for replacement will be covered by a 10-year (from engine date-in-service) extended coverage for parts only.

What's interesting to me:

I think DC is what screwed us on this. If only they would have worked out a warranty with the engine... It would be nice to have the option of going to a cummins diesel mechanic.

I was looking at my pump and contemplating just doing a preemptive R&R. Anyone have any neat tricks at getting that sucker out? Will removing the filter can help?

So, basically, a dead lift pump is a safety concern in Fire Trucks, Ambulances and School Busses,
but not in Dodge trucks.

What if the Dodge truck is owned by a Fireman, EMT or School Bus driver?

Or more importantly, a Television Master Control Operator?

So couldn't this "memo" be forwarded to NHTSA or someone like that regarding the pump issues with the Dodge trucks? Most people know about the problems we have, Cummins has "admitted it" per say with regards to vehicles powered by the same powerplant.

I'm sure there are more 98.5 to 02 Dodge trucks running around than there are firetrucks, buses, etc with the 5.9 in them?

Call a Cummins distributer in your state and ask to purchase a lift pump under that new part number listed above. That LP fits our trucks and costs $65 as opposed to $200; the sales reps are supposed to ask for your engine vin number and your business' name but they rarely do (this is to verify that this lower priced LP will be used in a bus, ambulance etc and not a dodge truck). I bought 2 LPs under the different part number from the Richmond, Va Cummins for $67 a peice, shipping included and absolutely no questions asked!!!

Order one from a cummins distrib. while the gettins' good, I here this is only a part time deal--Good luck
P.S. If one distributer gives you a hard time just try another location in your state or go and get a vin number off a bus w/ a 24vlv 5.9 in it -Good Luck

I am a fireman and I just put one of the 4090046 lp on my 2001 over the weekend yes you are right it is a recall my cummins dealer was not sure if he could sell it to me so he called cummins and they told him he could.as far as the low pressure switch I trashed it but it had a banjo bolt fitting that I put on the bottom of my fuel filter and hooked up autometer fuel gauge 16 psi idle 13 goin down the road 11 wot.

I just got off the phone with Cummins Rocky Mountain (in the Denver area). Parts guy wouldn't sell me that kit. Said I needed the vin from a bus in order to get it. I then tried the sob story of the reason I wanted the LP is because the LPs have been crap, and remain to be crap, and we alway have to pay high prices for a part that even Cummins admits to being crap. He didn't feel sorry enough to give me the part, but directed me to one of their customers who could get me a LP for less than the $178 they charge - but I imagine it will still be well over the $65 for this kit.

Too bad. I would have loved to get a decently priced LP.

Something just isn't right.

I orderd mine on Friday, it was supposed to be in Saturday, (I stopped in, they said Monday night and I haven't made it back yet).

There was no hesitation when I asked, he told me $64.00, no problem. Now, mind you I don' have the part in hand as of today, but I don't foresee any problems. Another member here from my general area got one a few weeks back, same dealer, same p#.

You guys are scaring me now, I'm going to check on it tommorow morning, they open at 7:30.

Besised this updated LP kit being cheaper to buy, is the pump any better quality or does it hold pressure better than the original stock LP? If you then i'll be going around to get one as a spare. If they ask for an ESN, i have found a number off a bus engine. Should i be able to use that if they ask?
