cranks for a long time then starts

In the last few days after the truck has been sitting for more than a few hours it cranks for 15-30 seconds befor she fires. Fuel pressure is good turn key it primes then goes to 17psi while cranking. you can shut it off and it will start rite up

It's a shot in the dark but are the cylinders taking a while to warm up? I don't know much about the subject but I'm actually rather curious about this myself <_< any answers?

If it's not a lift pump issue, it's usually a VP44 issue I hate to say. Do you have any codes?

Doesn't surprise me much. Just about certain it's the VP though...

with the cold weather it might be an air leak from ...filter or a line the cold could make a seal shrink

The exact thing was happening to my unit. Turned out to be a very small leak from a loose injector line. It took me forever to find it. I couldn't see it leaking but I found it by touch.

The odd thing was that it was running fine, then one day, it started acting up...lots of cranking if it sat for anything more than 10 or 15 minutes. I hadn't been playing with the tubes at the time.

There was a faint odor of raw diesel, which had been hanging around under the hood for a while but I had attributed that to a leaky filter drain.

I'd check at the long crank whether it emits white smoke or not. If there is white smoke, sniff to check whether it's diesel or normal exhaust.
I second the losing prime theory.
It can be the return line from the back of the head, and the fuel hoses that go up to the hardline to the filter too.

I think JoeCanuck and Wild4 are on the trail of your issue.

Had the same issue but it was after 4hrs that it would hard start. My issue was an injector had backed out of it's seat and let air in the system.

Good luck.

another thing to check for is heavy tank vacuum, loosen the cap once you shut the truck off, if it starts right up 3-4hrs later, the vacuum is sucking the fuel from the IP back to the tank. usually made worse by a leaky fuel line

My truck is doing a similar thing. Sometimes it fires up immediately. Other times it cranks several times and fires while other times I have to crank the heck out of it. There is no pattern for hot, cold or time between starts. Once running it runs as it always has which is good. No codes, no smoke. Both the VP and IP only have 30K miles on them.
