Crankcase vent bottle
Last week I had my truck into the dealer getting the rear U joint replaced for the second time in 50,000 KM. While I was talking to the mechanic he told me about an upgrade that DC doesn't want to publicise. It seems that if you have less than 60,000 KM and you complain about the oil covering your rad, they have an upgrade under warr. to replace the side cover and put a road vent tube at the back of the engine. So, for those of you with less than 60 K KM (don't know what that is in miles), Go and do some compaining. I don't think you'd want to pay for the upgrade though, it's a $750 touch.

Ruadh

Mine started to run hot because of oil coating the rad, took me a long time to clean it up and dont want to have that opertunity again. Could you find out the TSB#? I would sure like to have this mod done BTW i only have 52000 Km so I need it soon thanks

DC doesn't want to publicise it. You'll just have to go in and raise cain about it. It takes a day to do so count on that time being down as well.
Ruadh

Re:Crankcase vent bottle
For some of the newcomers to this subject, it's REAL easy to simply add a foot and a half to the existing down-hose to the bottle, then move the bottle down lower in relation to the engine - I used a water bottle and hanger like those used on bicycles, and mounted it horizontally to the front swaybar - after drilling vent holes in it, I then covered it with a couple of old worn out socks to act as both a filter and to absorb what little oil vapor that would otherwise still seep out - I change the old socks at oil change - not a DROP of oil ANYWHERE under the truck, or on the garage floor... Quick, CHEEEP, and EASY! ;D ;D

Re:Crankcase vent bottle
There is a TSB on this modification. Most people just do the 'add the hose' modification. The TSB requires that about everything on the drivers side of the Cummins be taken off to install the new side plate. Do you really want the dealer to tear your VP-44 off a perfectly running truck? Here is a link to the TSB on Dave Fritz's fine site...

http://dodgeram.info/tsb/2002/09-002-02.htm

I also read a thread somewhere about a guy that added a stock breather cap onto the top rear corner of his valve cover. I think that this position would even be superior to the TSB. But my hose mod is good 'nuff for me.

With all due respect for Eric and the above mod, it seems pretty silly to me, to REMOVE the valve cover, REAM in ANOTHER opening, reinstall and all that when you ALREADY have a perfectly usable opening where the oil fill cap is that will do EXACTLY the same thing, if that is the way you wanna go... WHY go to all that trouble to gouge out a new opening in the valve cover, when one is already there? Other engines have used the oil-fill opening as a crankcase breather for MANY years! ??? ???

Re:Crankcase vent bottle
The problem they were trying to solve was when decending steep hills nose first. The oil would pour out the stock breather bottle in the front. He put the new hole into the top rear so it would solve this problem, too. I haven't seen the TSB mod yet, but I assumate that the 'breather' tube is relocated somewhere in the middle on the side cover, which would address this problem, too. Like I said, I like the extended hose solution too the oil mist problem, I don't do hills. Enjoy your holiday. Jerry.

I'll flat out guarantee you there's NO WAY you would ever *drive* down an incline steep enought to allow oil to leak ot the oil fill on the FRONT of the valve cover! Leastwise, I would sure like to be around to see it... ;D ;D ;D
The oil loss thru the stock breather lower on the front of the engine on steep inclines is another matter entirely, and has other contributing factors...
Here's a pic from topside showing my breather setup - can't really see much from this angle other than the condition of the front of the engine after a year's use and 13,000 miles...

Re:Crankcase vent bottle
...and from the bottom - again, hard to get a good revealing pic - the bottle is secured to the front swaybar - the bottle assembly is a water bottle like those that are fastened to the frame of a bicycle, it mounts very securely, but I wrap it with a cable tie for added security - this photo shows the condition of the sock/filter with 3000 miles on it... Of course, this won't take care of the oil loss on steep decents - but for relatively normal use, will completely avoid oil mess on the engine or garage floors... Total cost was about $5, and 20 minutes install time... ;D ;D
