Cracked exhaust manifold.

Just noticed a large crack in my ex. man. Close to the turbo. Cant hear it but sure can feel it. What in your opinion would be the best direction for a replacement ? Napa, Cummins, Dodge, etc. Thanx-

my suggestion is oem, i have over 200,000 miles on mine. there's a lot of talk about the 3 piece manifold but i don't think the extra cost is worth it

Yea! try ebay. Dodge and Cummins are gonna eat your lunch for the piece. AFter you see new price a good aftermarket might not be objectionable.

No the 98 + 1/2 and newer 24 valve have a different port shape than the older ones 89-98 12 valve will not fit. 98 + 1/2 threw 2002 are what you need.

If you want to up grade , then a couple of the aftermarket are good .
If you want new replacement , go to Cummins , better price [ more if you join NPower Club ] .
The cheapest would be to go to a junk yard , and to keep form happening again , go through all the mounting holes , and cut them egg shaped , side to side , what happens is , they shrink & expand with heat & cool , push against the mount bolts/studs .
Its been happening on many cars / trucks form many years , I have welded up many & cut the holes , with no comebacks for over 20 yrs .

I know this statement is going to have the welders come out of hiding....
I have a 110V mig welder(lincon Miller) and have run a bead on cracks...yeah I know cast steel yada yada.
But I have welded more than one crack and welded in bungs for pyro's for a few years now with no issues. keep in mind I did not remove the manifolds, so likely the weld is not a structural weld but just filling in the crack to stop a leak

If you can get at the crack without removing the exhaust, what do you have to loose... worst case is you have to shell out $$$ for a new or used manifold.

If memory serves, 12v and 24v manifolds are not interchangeable in a regular application.
12v manifolds are noted for shrinking and either breaking off an ear or breaking the mounting block on the corner of the head.
24v manifolds are noted for cracking under the center collector.

If I had to replace my manifold, I would go with a 3 piece aftermarket. Buying used is a crap shoot, & OEM sometimes doesn't make any economical or practical sense.

edit
Sorry for the repeat information. My ISP went down and sent the reply late.

I'd go with an aftermarket one unless you can find a cheap OEM one. Risk of a 3-piece cracking is marginal at best, we all know that there is a risk with the OEM manifolds, so you might be doing it all over again. Might check the classifieds on various diesel sites, there are guys who will swap out a good OEM one for a 3-piece, could probably pick it up for $50.

mine cracked at the collector under the turbo. i was lucky and found a used ats CHEAP from a local getting ready to trade a truck in and was stripping the performance parts of it. i personally like the quality of it and it weighs a good bit more.

I'll double check in the garage but I think I still have my facftory one off my '02. I went with the ATS 3 piece, absolutely nothing wrong with the one I took off if you can use it.
