Hmmmm. I think yall have convinced me on the synthetic. I see the point of it. If I never use it and it rarely gets changed, why not put something in it that will keep it very lubricated and will last me a million miles.

Good decision. The main problem with transfer cases is the heat generated by the belt. It'll heat up, loosen, begin to whip back and forth, loosen more, stretch, heat up more, and eventually break. Carry away the heat more effectively, and the belt will last longer.

Synthetics do that much better, and without breaking down as fast. I use the Redline High Temperature ATF. I still change it out every 40K miles or so.

Well, I didn't go with synthetic casue I couldn't find any. So I did Castrol ATF+3. Haven't changed the fluid yet cause I can't find my funnel (I really need to clean up the garage). I'll let yall know how it looks when I'm done. Thanks for the help.

Well, just got it changed. Talk about a messy job. I didn't use a pump like yall told me to (I've gotta learn things the hard way). Fluid went everywhere. I did take the skid plate off this time, but next time I'm gonna do the crossmember right there as well. I got almost 3 quarts of fluid in it. Had to use a gas can nozzle to fill it up since my funnel was to small. Now that that's done, it looks like it's time to do the front axle and cooling system. So much to do, so little money.

Oh ya. The fluid was still pretty red but more of a deep dark cherry or crimson red. Didn't smell any different than the new stuff (which is bright pink now ). Thanks for the help yall.

I did mine yesterday. I took a piece of 2" pvc pipe, and split it down the middle on my band saw. This made a trough for it flow down to the bucket in. This also let me keep the skid plate in place.

My bucket was not large enough. I had smelly ATF all over the shop floor. Oh well, I keep that kitty litter looking stuff handy, so it didnt bother me.

Hmmmm. Guess I'll have to try that next time. I used my roommates car wash bucket to catch the oil in. Don't think he's gonna be to happy about that.
