Changed the rear axle fluid

Well. At 37,519 miles, I finally got around to changing the rear axle fluid. This was the first time it had ever been done. I know. A little late. : Well, after busting my knuckles on every bolt trying to loosen them (I had to use a hammer on some of them), using the hammer to bust off the cover, the oil started coming out. It was nice, thin, and black. Real nice, huh? I put 80W-90 in it. Didn't need any LSD additive. LSD works great (left 2 nice black marks). ;D The magnet that's in there was covered with crap. It took me about 5 minutes to clean it off. I filled it about 1/4" below the fill hole. The rear end is so much smoother now. Any of yall debating to do this, I highly recommend it. Don't put it off. I guess I need to do the front one now.

Don't feel too bad Blue, with the heavy work I do, mine was changed the first time at 110,000, and twice since then. My limited is weak with synthetic 90 in it and no additives.

I did both of mine right around 16,000.

Why?
Why not.

I waited too long on my previous vehicles.
This truck costs just too darn much to take any chances.
With all the talk of the '03's coming without much oil in the diffs I didn't want to take a chance.

Oh, had the Dealer do it, didn't want any warranty questions if something happens.

Acutally, I had it done twice around 16,000.
First time, they didn't put the right amount of gunky gasket material (RTV?) and they both leaked, so they did it again free, pretty impossible to remove and replace the cover without replacing the fluid as well. (they might have drained it into something they could pump it back out of, but I doubt it, probably a waste of a gallon of oil)

phox

Re:Changed the rear axle fluid

Did mine yesterday @ 17,710, fluid came out was in pretty good shape though the mag plug was loaded. Re-filled it with Royal Purple 75w140 and was able to reuse the gasket, Guess this weekend i'll do the front axle. ;D
