Camper size and EGTs for 24valve

Just wondering what size campers you guys pull and what are your egts and temp underload on inclines. My EGTs get to 1200 on long inclines relatively quick. My engine temp will go to about 210. I am pulling a 24' camper only at 5500 lbs. I would cook the engine I believe if I have a 29 plus footer over 7k. I juist put on a 4" exhaust and am surprised at the unusable power on such a low modded truck.

I tow a 26 foot Star Stream and my egts when pulling a hill will get to 1100 or so and the temp will hit 95 to 100 Celsius (210 Fahrenheit). Keep in mind, you can tow all day long at 1350 EGT if your probe is pre-turbo and not hurt the pistons, sustained temps at 1400 or higher WILL cause problems. Your temps at 210 are nothing to worry about, your clutch fan should kick in and keep things in check . Have you moved your puke bottle and removed your rad and washed it out really well? There is no way to properly wash it out while its still installed on the truck.

I tow a high profile 11.7K lb fifth wheel. Mostly flats, but I have only seen 1200 degree EGTs sustaining 60 MPH up steep hills of no more than a mile.

I have a 32' that weighs ~10k and a stock engine. I can push 1300+ with my foot on the floor on the long grades, but keep it around 1150 which also keeps the engine temp under 200. I was under the impression that over 1200 was in the danger zone for 2nd gen's ? On long grades (10 + miles at 6%-7%) that usually put me in 2nd at ~35mph.

I'm thinking of putting in a edge ez, but I'm afraid the stock auto might not be up to the task.

Thanks for the replys. I have relocated the puke system. I will get the rad cleaned. However, I am not sure getting Mach 1.6 injectors and a super b will be any better ,other than having more UNusable power I dont need power for racing, I dont need power for flats. I need power for pulling weight and grades. Quess I will back off the power and drive it like a gasser. Oh for good engineering.

cumalong......

Have you j -hooked your turbo? If not , that would get the EGTs down.

I am willing to do that. HOWEVER, this hy35 is not even being used up as is, before EGTs get up. IE I am about at 18psi when it gets hot. I have gotten this thing to 20psi before, but pullin the camper on medium grade at 60MPH its at 18psi and 1200egt. So if its not calling for more boost, how can the j hook help? Will it be at say 25psi at the same load with J-hook? cause I know its not going to wastegate at 18. Thanks

The waste gate is opening on the turbo between 18 and 20 psi. Try the J hook and you should be able to se 24psi to 30 psi. I have the same rig with a Xzt box can hit 24 not towing.

It should build a bit more boost and cooler EGTs. You are REALLY gonna need it when you add injectors, so its worth a try now IMHO. You may be suprised with the results.

Happy towing!

No J-hook is your problem. I pull a 30' and with my Stage 3 nozzles and XZT+ in fuel/timing mode, I've been able to maintain my speed and keep EGTs under 1200* while hitting 28psi of boost. Just remember when pulling grades to turn the cruise off and use your foot to control the temps.

Or just lock it closed with a $4.00 turn buckle. You won't exceed the 32 psi max on your HY-35 with just an EZ!

Yep, I am going with the recession style "turnbuckle". What is the map or boost level efficiency rating for the HY?

You might also need a boost fooler to keep it from throwing a code unless the EZ has one already built in. I ran mine for a while without the fooler and it never threw any codes.

The EZ has a boost fooler built in so your good there.

My setup towing in the Rockies will hit 1300* if I let it, 26'TT ~7k. Plenty of power up the grades but I have to shift it to 3rd to control egts often.

Water temps 190 - 210 then the fan clutch kicks in and I'm back down to 190 real quick.
