brand new to site
Hello, I am brand new to this site and to the diesel truck environment. I would like some expert advise on the best year for the most dependabilty and power etc. I would like to purchase a 4x4 with higher mileage to get a better deal. Would this be a smart decision? Thanks for any advise.

You need to do your homework....and DTR is the place for that.
First decision....12v (98 and earlier) vs 24v 98.5 and later. Depends on your budget & mechanical ability.
I would be comfortable buying a CLEAN CTD with up to 200,000 miles on it.
Good Luck - RJ

My preferences would be....
If 12v - 1998
If 24v - 2001 or 2002 (watch out for #53 engine block on the early 01's)
If Third Gen - 2004 (not real familiar with these).
Do lots of searches here.... You'll learn a great deal!

The 12V '98 & earlier are relatively bulletproof, but getting up there in mileage. I know of several with close to 400K & not many probs.
Haven't done much research on the '03 & later trucks.
The '98.5 thru '02 24V are good trucks, but have fuel system issues. They can be found w/100k to 200K miles for a reasonable price. If you find one of these with 1) a fuel pressure gauge 2) a frame mounted transfer pump replaced with something other than a carter (also called lift pump) 3) and an injector pump has been replaced recently, I'd buy it because the owner has already fixed the most common & expensive fuel system problem & the gauge allows you to monitor & head off low fuel pressure to the injector pump which is certain death for it.
I've been through all this with my '99, I love my truck & I love this site. Here you'll find info to solve nearly every problem imaginable & the members are great folks willing to help.
Best of luck.
