New Turbo?? Was: Boost pressure and EGT readings

Now that I have my EGT and boost gauges in place, I am struggling to keep my eyes OFF them while driving. But I have questions now, showing my diesel performance ignorance.
What should I be seeing for readings?

WOT, I am at about 24 pounds of boost? I tapped into the intake via the plug on the DS, back end of the engine? Since the gauge is 0-35 psi, I assume that 24 is a good number. My mechanic friend who helped me put it in (ok.. I helped HIM) was unfamiliar with the readings as well. He's used to 10-14 pounds seen in car turbos.

Also, the EGT needle is a busy little bugger. Cruising at 74 on the interstate unloaded I was up in the 800 degree range or so. At idle this morning, was somewhere in the 250 - 300 range?

Your boost sounds a little high. Do you have some sort of fueling box on your truck? Most stock trucks run around 18-20 psi. Your EGT's sound normal for a pre turbo gauge. You did mount your probe pre turbo right?

No intake side mods at all.

EGT is right on the rear runner of the exhaust manifold.

24 psi is high for a stocker.....it should be gated for 20 psi - 22 psi tops.....do you have a 0234 DTC? ....might want to check for that code - it's the overboost code and it could mean you have a sticky wastegate......the ECM will defuel past 20 psi......

Could my gauge just be off a bit?

How do I get the codes to read again?

Turn the key to on then off then on then off then on and codes will appear in the odometer.

Thanks Phox. I couldn't remember how many on-off combinations.

If it's an HO engine, up to 26 is the normal boost on it.

It's not. SO.
It's 23 or so. I dont know what the margin for error is in the gauge.

I just connected my boost gauge. 22psi seems like my max, but its only been a few days, more testing is required

My first boost gauge was about 1-2lbs high. It was an Isspro EV. It sat at about 1-2 even when off and I could make it show about 21+ at WOT.

I sent it back and the new one works correctly. So yes, it could be the gauge itself.

Ok. 0234 ECU?? IS that the same thing?

Also had a 1693 PCU pulled too. Any idea what this one is??

I have an LOF appointment on Thursday so I will have them check these codes to see what they say.

Any advanced knowledge would be supremely helpful.

thanks guys!

Yes, P0234 is overboost.
P1693 is the code thrown in the PCM when there's a code in the ECM that the PCM can't see.

When you get it scanned you might find another code hidden in there,
or it might just be a leftover.

I'm going to stick with my original diagnoses that the ECM is giving a 0234 DTC because of a sticky wastegate....it is still a good idea to have it scanned anyway to make sure there isn't another DTC hidden behind that annoying 1693 DTC!
