Billowing White smoke on start-up
When i start my truck up in the morning (usually in the mid-upper 30's) it starts ok but it runs rough for a few seconds and it will smoke heavily of white smoke for about 15 seconds.
My guess is that the grid heater isn't working somehow but im not sure. I don't think the VP-44 is goin out because it still runs fine. I've heard that the grid heater rarely goes bad but it could be a relay?

I can tell when my grid heaters are on.... the voltage is real low. If I forget that they are on, & hit the wipers .... they are noticeably slower.
The poor altenator can't keep up with the load... don't add to it's woes by running seat (bum) warmers or other high electrical loads.

Thats why we have dual batteries, so we can run that stuff while the heaters are on. Or, do what I do, get an Espar, and you won't need those grid heaters anymore.

The white smoke is raw fuel. This is caused by extremely low cylinder temps. You do need to check out the grid heaters. Mine will white smoke a very small amount if it gets down in the 30's. Be sure the heater system is working.

with my new vp id hardly smokes, with my old vp it smoked alot when cold at startup . might be a sign of things to come, but my old vp smoked heavy for 4 years before it died.
