Better MPG

I keep reading about you guys getting 20 mpg and up. I have a '01 with auto tranny. I can't get over 18.5. I just cut off the exhaust and ran straight pipe. What else do I need to do to increase the mpg? [undecided]

Tape an egg to the Go pedal.

Seriously now.
Try cleaning the IAT sensor (intake air temp), many have found cleaning it helps MPG.

Premium Diesel, over 50 Cetane, or perhaps a Cetane boosting fuel additive, will help get some MPG's as well.

I don't think the auto trannys will see much over 18-19 though.

phox

Re:Better MPG

I've seen dang near 25 before on mine. Only happened once. I placed an egg between my foot and the pedal though to do it . Had the tail gate down. Windows rolled up. AC off. Was doing a needle's width past 65mph. Crusied at that same speed for 6 hours. It was also 50 degrees outside and I was headed to Oklahoma.

Re:Better MPG

My round trip to work and back is 54 miles. 26 are freeway(65 mph speed limit) 28 are back roads(45 mph speed limit). I usually put another 6 miles on at work. I encounter 28 stop signs during the day.
I'll average 17.8 during the winter and 18.5 summer.
With straight highway driving, I've had as high as 25.8 mpg. Normally around 20 running 70 mph.
Depends on the foot and the lay of the land.

Re:Better MPG

Put an EZ on, change your fuel filter every other oil change, keep a clean air filter, and use a fuel additive. I get 17+ back and forth to work/in town. I'll get 20+ on the hwy and out here you can't go more than 20 miles or so w/o slowing down or stopping for construction, accident, or "phantom slows". Once I have seen 24mpg (measured, not on overhead). I drive a 2001.5 QCLB 4x4 with auto and 3.55's, stock air in and out, and no eggs.

P.S. reset your apps (procedure is posted somewhere on this site) and don't drive with the cruise on.

Re:Better MPG

Most are highway miles, don't hardly ever use the cruise. Will a K&N air filter help? also what is an EZ? Thanks for the advice so far.

Re:Better MPG

An EZ is like a chip with a boost fooler built in. It doesn't mess with any pump wires. Works mostly through timing changes (someone correct me if I'm wrong). It seems like I picked up 1 mpg after I put one on. Check mpg at the pump rather than the overhead. It seems like it is a little optimistic after the EZ. Check it out here. As for not using the cruise, I will get better mileage if I don't use it. I don't know why, I think it has to do with a smoother reaction with the accelerator than the cruise. ??? I will always get more MPG with the foot feed than cruise when towing especially.

Re:Better MPG

Sometimes the fuel MPG thing cracks me up... I have had...
a 97 3500 4x4 355 5 speed
a 98 3500 4x4 355 5 speed
a 99 2500 4x4 355 auto
a 01 2500 4x4 355 auto

I have never been able to get any of them over 17 mpg and don't have the patience to drive 50 mpg to get 18 or 19 out of them. 14 and 15 is the average and that is doing the math!

One thing that was nice though on the 01 that I have now I lifted it and put 36" tires on it and it made very little
difference on my fuel economy (-2mpg tops).

Re:Better MPG

Fitzer 01.5 do have an iat sensor, your in the right area, it's right beside the ecm closer to the firewall. A spark plug socket works perfectly with a short extension (6in i think)

rob

PHOX: Do the 2001.5's have an IAT sensor? I've looked for it, and can't spot it. From what I understand, it's somewhere around the fuel filter, but all I can find is the MAP sensor. Am I not looking close enough?

Here's a page with locations of pretty near everything.

Hope it helps.

Re:Better MPG

55-60 mph, without the a/c. windows up, around 50 degrees outside, relatively rolling hills and long flat roads. 28.5 mpg. I wasnt in a hurry, and it seemed to tick a lot of people off, even though I was in the right lane. I was on the road for about 4 1/2 - 5 hrs. It was so boring I lost rack of time.
