Best Fuel Additive for cleaning??

I was wondering what the best fuel additive is for cleaning out injectors and such. I have been using Lucas brand upper cylinder cleaner (cant tell if it makes a difference) but its for diesel or gas engines. Should I be using something else?? Thanks -A.Wall

Save your money Awall. Hook onto the heaviest trailer you have and preferably find the longest grade close to you. Run up and down a couple of times, get your egts up, and you should be clean. Save and spend your money on things that actually help your truck. Most of these "cleaners" are hard on our fuel systems because they contain some sort of solvent, thus are very dry.

What he said, so if you still want some for the tank, go to your best pump service guy and ask him for the product that cleans AND lubes. There are a couple and I've used one with good results.

I don't use these additives that search for a problem that does not exist. And never have. My engine runs perfectly and only gets one annual shot of biocide and a twice annual shot of cleaner/cetane booster. At 143,700, it runs perfectly. I drive at 55mph maximum and get 23.67 mpg.

Relax, it was built to run on straight diesel.

Running some diesel treatment once in a while like PS will be good for your truck if you want to do so. You do not have to run it in every tank.

To those who want to use these "cleaners" in your truck. Search this web site. It has been discussed a lot. You can also Google the msds's for these products. You will find that they are harsh on your fuel system. Most consist of not much more than lighter fluid. It is not "good" to run these products. There is no need for them. Big business has put enough misinformation out there as to convince much of the public that they need these products. Guess what, it's not your truck they care about. It's their bottom line. Like I said, save your money and spend it on something meaningful for your truck. And like someone else said in this thread, the only thing you might need to add is something to lube the fuel (although it should already be there) and some biocide once a year.

Power service is one of the best diesel additives out there.

Are you referring to Power Service Diesel Kleen?

IF available, good quality biodiesel fuel is a cheap, effective additive. The methylesters are known to be good cleaners, and it's got a lot more lubricity than today's petroleum diesel fuel. Concentrations of 20% or less should be no problem for your truck. And other than NOX, all other exhaust emissions will drop proportionately with what ever concentration you're using.

like alot of people said before. I use my own cocktail mainly for the lube benies. lucas upper cyl or power service. I use 2 cycle mix. but the big thing I would say if you do more city around town driving need to get the EGT's around 800-900 for a few miles this will help alot more and be cheaper. but still consider the lube qualities of these additives as well. I have used bio I know the result of the first couple times of using this was it cleaned alot of gunk from my tank which I had to change my fuel filter earlier than normal due to it breaking up crap in the tank.

When did you become convinced of that? Less than two months ago on a thread called "power service" you asked, "should I keep using it or is it just a gimmick?" Doesn't sound like you were convinced it was one of the best back then.

That is part of the problem. Guys think they need to use additives because it's what everyone else is saying they must do. To each their own when it comes to their trucks but lets make sure we are putting out reliable information for others that may not know. The MSDS does not lie. Read it and form your own opinion.

There are guys out there that have never used fuel additives and have several hundred thousand miles on their original fuel system. As we have progressed away from high sulfur fuel, people created hysteria that our fuel systems would not hold up and cost owners thousands of dollars. That has not happened because there is lube in our fuel. Just not sulfur. If our fuel systems were failing today at the rate predicted, it would be the main topic of conversation on this web site.

My truck does seem to run quieter on tank with PS in it. I do not use it in every tank however.
P.S. Ive used their 911 formula in tank of summer blend and truck ran great (it was during 5F temperatures), it never gelled so if that doesn't convince you....

I agree there is a place for 911 if you have gelling fuel. Using Diesel Kleen (or any other fuel additive) on a regular basis because it is "good" for our trucks is another matter.

I guess this is a good point and question. to each there own is right and also I fall in the spot of since I have driven 4 different cummins trucks I Too have used some sort of cocktail of additive. (probley due to everyone saying I needed to.) but to each there own I do notice a quiter truck with additive but I dont run it on everytank makes me wonder did I ever need the additive in all of these years. but I have never had a huge fuel system problem so I'm not going to say it was or wasnt due to running a additive. I as well as others probley run it more in the winter months than the warmer months but that is the gelling factor not anything else. good question do we really need this added.???? to each there own wallet.
